How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years, I hope to construct a better shelter for our family of 3 members. Since I got married two years ago, I have not had the chance to build a durable and spacious house. We have been residing in a mud-walled structure that requires frequent maintenance because the walls are constantly brought down by rain. I intend to construct a permanent shelter once I got some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I feel that Givedirectly did well in giving aid in form of unconditional cash transfers. Through this, we had the opportunity to select what we can do with cash according to the household's wish. The enrollment processes where well conducted and I do not think there is anything that they should improve.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a businessman dealing with buying and selling livestock, for quite some time I had desired to boost this business. The coming and receiving of the Givedirectly transfer revived my dream of improving it. I invested $300 of the recent transfers on improving the capital. I am delighted that the income has improved from $30-$50 per week after successfully selling the livestock. This can comfortably meet the family's needs like food without much strain. Furthermore, I spent $100 to support the education of my children by clearing their fee arrears. Currently, our two children are happy for not missing classes due to financial challenges hence restoring peace of mind in our lives. The remaining amount helped us in buying sufficient foodstuffs and clothing for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I switched on the phone. Then immediately I got a message notification. when I checked it out I felt so happy. It was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. This was one of the happiest mornings I have ever had. I inform my family members and everyone was so happy for me. I knew I would be able to boost my business. I stayed for three days planning with my family. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Boosting my business of livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life. I was able to invest KES 50,000 in this amazing business. I have been doing this for more than five years now and I have some experience. The biggest challenge that I had was the finances. I used to borrow from friends and I would return with some interest and this was straining me a lot. I have always depended on this to meet my household's basic needs and pay the school fees. When I received the transfer I felt so happy we discussed it with my family members and we agreed I invest. Currently I no longer stress up on When to pay back the loans. The profits that I get I save and spend some on household items and pay school fees for my children in various schools. I am so grateful for the support because it has given me peace of mind and even devote much of my time to this without being disturbed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 50,000 on boosting my business livestock. I purchase dairy cows and heifers at the market and sell them to farmers at a little bit higher price to earn some profits. I used to borrow some money from friends but currently, I no longer do tut because I have enough stock and all the profits are mine. I am so grateful for the support it has enabled me to run my business without any stress. For the rest of the money, I bought food and household items. GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and enabled us to fulfill our dreams.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I trade on livestock for us to make a living. This has proven to be a profitable business but I feel that I am not realizing significant income because I started it with little capital. To be precise, profits from the business are just enough to meet our basic needs. So, receiving this money means a huge increase in our income since I will invest all the transfers in this business. I am happy and hopeful for a brighter future for my family when we shall be financially stable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We used to have a small kitchen with a grass-thatched roof. Luckily, about four months ago we improved it to a bigger and semi-permanent one with an iron-sheet roof. This has improved my wife's self-esteem brought us joy as a family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Limited farmland serves as the biggest challenge to us. We inherited 0.8 acres of land from our parents (who were relatively poor). This is where we reside and exercise some farming. As such, I feel that I have missed a chance to expand my passion for farming.
