How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a goal of completing my house to completion. Using the second transfer, I bought some construction materials and commenced the building process. Since the demands were many compared to the cash, I was unable to complete it. Currently, I have a business selling charcoal and firewood. Through this business, I am optimistic about seeing my goal come to pass.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an organization that did wonders not only for me but also for the community at large. We are very happy about it and we are wishing it could come back for a third time only that their policies do not allow it as per how they told us. I started sleeping on a modern bed and a mattress after receiving the first transfer. Initially, I was sleeping on the floor. I have not seen or heard of any fault thing concerning the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I had some challenges concerning my house, I opted to build a new house because the one I had was very old and unstable, especially during windy and rainy seasons. On one side it was collapsing thus I opted for a new one instead of renovating it. I bought 16 pieces of iron sheets for KES 17600.00, poles and rafters for KES 10000.00, and a labor charge of KES 7000.00. The house however did not come to completion since I ran short of money after paying KES 9000.00 school fees for my six children and buying three goats for KES 9000.00.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3 pm when I was at home relaxing with my children after completing my morning and afternoon chores at the farm. We were very exhausted after spending the whole day working at the farm preparing it ready for the planting season that is expected by the onset of short rains. I heard a message alert on my mobile phone, after checking it I could not hold up my joy when I saw the transfer from GiveDirectly in my account. I shared the good news about the receipt of our transfer with the rest of my family members and we jointly celebrated and thank God for the opportunity that marked a great transition for a better future.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning households furniture is the biggest difference in my life. Previously, I had to borrow from our neighbors, and most of the time I could be mocked. The coming of GiveDirectly and the transfer has installed confidence as I no longer have to seek help from relatives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For over a decade, I have been sleeping on the floor using a small, old mattress that was not comfortable at all. I was always experiencing backbone pains due to the bad conditions of my bedding. After receiving my transfer, I spent KES 13,000 to purchase a bed and mattress. Currently, I am happy enjoying my nights in good comfortable beddings. I also bought building materials that included 16 iron sheets, and building poles. I intended to construct a new shelter for my family because the one we are having at the moment is about to collapse. With the remaining amount, I bought household furniture like chairs, tables, and a small water tank. Formerly, I was forced to borrow from our neighbors which were very stressful due to the frequent mocking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It has been 8 years since I separated from my husband and because I had 8 children to take care of I decided to be a domestic worker and earned KES 5000 monthly. The job was giving me enough to support my children but unfortunately, I was trike down by a fatal disease that left me bedridden for a long time before I regained my strength. This left me with no choice but to start depending on my children. These transfers will allow me to be back again on my feet by starting a business because I have improved since I started taking medications. I plan to spend the money on starting a grocery business with KES 2000, buy 3 goats that will cost KES 13,500, and save the rest of the money for emergencies.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My children have been taking good care of me without complaining and making sure that I feed well because I am under medication. Seeing them very concerned about my health and well-being has brought joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having no job or business made me depend on my children. I have regained strength and would like to start a business or get a job but due to lack of money and unemployment, I have not been lucky to achieve this.
