How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
When I got the funds from give directly, I was able to purchase some tiles so I could work on finishing my house. However, I still had a deficit of KES 15000 to complete this process. Therefore, my new Goal is to gather this amount, which will help buy cement, more tiles and also cover the labor cost. Since I am unemployed, I believe my husband, who works as a wiring man, will work at ensuring that this has been fulfilled.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly has offered great support to us. We are all happier and filled with so much gratitude towards the organization. I now have a water tank to help store rainwater and save me from the hustle of walking for two hours to fetch water. Other than this, I was able to buy a fridge and bought some tiles to improve my house. There is no area the organization has not done well
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being unemployed, I depend on my husband who does wiring for living. One day while he was at work, he, unfortunately, fell from a pole and hurt himself. He was hospitalized for several days and this made us incur a hospital bill of KES 560000. we managed to raise 430000 and they agreed to discharge him on the condition that we should work towards settling the debt. This has limited us to improve our lives. So, when I got the funds from give directly the first thing I did was purchase a water tank to act as a water reservoir. With this in the compound, I will not be needed to walk for 2 hours just to go and fetch water as I will have stored some rainwater. Whatever amount remained, I used to improve my house by purchasing some tiles.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I heard my phone ring t hat day I never reallyi8 expected to be a mesge from GiveDirectly. When I checked and confirmed that I had indeed received money from GiveDirectly I was so ful of joy. I called my husband who was not at home and when I shared the good news with him he voouukh him him he could not believe that we had indeed received money from GiveDirectly. He had to come home and confirm that it was true.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the furniture that we bought. The house looks very comfortable and neat now and we are one family that is now happy than we have been before. When my husband was involved in an accident in 2019 everything came to a standstill and we are happy that GiveDirectly came in handy to boost us. I am personally very haretul for this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Earlier on we had planned to use the money to clear a hospital bill for my husband who had accrued money for hospital bill having been involved in an accident back in 2019. When the money came however, we decided to spend it on household furniture. We did not have any furniture in our house having had to stop everything when my husband fell ill Tha time. We used the entire amount on it therefore and we are so happy that give dire ctky enabled us to do this. We have plans of using the entire transfer that we are waiting to pay the hospital bill although we will not be able to clear it all.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In 2019 November my spouse fell from an electric pole while at work and had a leg injury. He was admitted at Tenwek hospital and could not walk for over a year. His medical bill was initially at KES 500,000 but through out last year we've managed to pay it partially through well wishers and loans. At the moment we have a bill of KES 130,000 which we intend to pay using all of our transfer from Give Directly. Receiving this money will mean health and financial freedom for us because we'll be able to finish the medical bill and focus our attention on other needs such as finishing our kitchen.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In August of this year my husband started walking again without any assistance from crutches. Even though he has a limp, I'm grateful that he is now slowly able to work and help bring in some income after his terrible accident.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When my husband had an accident in 2019 and fell from an electric pole he could not walk and this meant we had to depend on subsistence farming from our shared piece of land. His medical bill is still not fully paid and each month we get called by the hospital reminding us to pay any amount so as not to accumulate the bill longer.
