What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Unfortunately three days prior to receiving the money my two children had been sent back home because they had a debt in tuition fee and I barely had money on me to send them back. Then a few days later I received the funds from GiveDirectly and to be honest I was happy and also shocked with how the universe works sometimes especially when something you really needed and wanted came through for you in the least unexpected way. Nevertheless I was grateful I paid KES 2,000 for them which was split equally between them . Then I used the balance of KES 1,000 to purchase six packets of maize flour, sardines and drinking water since it was scarce in our area and normally I had to fetch it in neighbouring towns.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought a goat at KES 2000 using my recent transfer. My expectation is that it will reproduce and sell the offspring in case of financial need such as fees for my children. In addition to this, I spent KES 500 to pay for school fees for my child in primary level of education. He is now going on with his studies without interruption on fees. I spent the remaining amount on buying enough foodstuffs such as cereals that can serve for some weeks .

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Thanks to Give directly, I am now able to buy food for my children ensuring that they have at least two healthy meals a day as the other they are in school. I am also able to pay school fees without a strain looking for work. I cannot complain about anything.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I got this money, I prioritized my children's education first. This meant I had to spend KES.2000 on their school fees. I paid for my two children who are still in school. I wanted them to experience sitting in class throughout without the disturbance of being sent home. I was able to spend KES.1000 on food and water for the family so that we can have the energy to face the day's tasks. We have to buy water due to the drought. I am grateful to Give directly for the opportunity to better myself and my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment when I first received this money was when I was at home preparing for household chores when I saw the message on my phone. I could not help but shed tears of joy. I knew that I could now pay the school feed without having to struggle.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a source of income that would fill the cracks in my life. My children no longer have to be sent home due to fees balance as can now schedule when I get the money I can pay school fees. I can also feed my family healthy meals before they leave for school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The first thing I did when I received this transfer was quickly sent back my children to school as they had just been sent home the previous day. I did not want them to miss a single lesson and I was happy that Give directly came in then. I paid KES.800 and the other KES.400 was spent on food so that when the children go to school they can concentrate with a full belly. Thank you Give directly for this opportunity.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a single mother of five, my husband passed on in the year 2020 leaving me with the responsibility of paying school fees for our two school going children as well as feeding them. At my age of 62 years, it is very difficult to get employment, therefore, I have to depend on neighbors for food because three of my children who are not in school do not make enough money to share with me. With this money, I will be able to see my two children through secondary school and also afford some food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I feel so happy when my children who work in Mombasa come to visit me every month. They might not come bearing a lot of gifts or money but the mere fact that they always come by to check on me makes my heart leap with joy. I feel like I did a good job as a parent raising very thoughtful and disciplined children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My health is failing me. I have back problems that really limit my physical activities, yet I have to do casual jobs in the village like digging other people's farm in exchange for food. Although I'm not badly off, I could use some relief funds so that I don't have to bend and strain my back all day for food.
