How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I was previously employed as a water vendor which I had to quit when I gave birth to take care of my baby. After quitting the job, I had to depend on my husband financially and for every little personal and household need. I was not very comfortable with having to depend on my husband since I had previously been independent while I was employed. Receiving the transfers gave me back my financial independence even though I do not have any source of come and an opportunity to save for future dreams and ambitions which I know I will accomplish. One of such dreams is taking a course on beauty services and hairdressing which will be commencing next month after which I can open a beauty salon.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I have always been passionate about beauty and most specifically hairdressing which I partially learnt through a friend. I want to be perfect at hairdressing and other beauty services so that I can later have a beauty salon. For this reason, I have plans of joining a beauty college once my child hits one year and I can comfortably leave her home with a nanny. I have been making some savings which I know can manage to pay for the required fee, but I would like to use the transfers to pay the school fee so that my savings can later help me in setting up the beauty salon once I complete the course.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
During the period which I received my most recent transfer, my child was not feeling too good, so I spent most of the transfer on her treatment and medication. I saved the rest of the money on my M-shwari account as I usually try to do each month for future plans.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was in that, I have hopes of achieving my dreams because I am sure of my monthly transfer. Taking care of emergencies has been easy. Recently I was able to take my child to the hospital when he fell sick and being responsible for doing shopping in my house makes me a proud woman.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to start a business. This has been my dream and I know that I can never go wrong in doing business. I am planning to use the profit to pursue a hairdressing and beauty course which will also supplement my income in the future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on my child's treatment. I am glad that he is doing well. Part of it was spent on buying fruits which were essential to help him gain energy and vitamins to improve his health. Becides taking care of the medical bill, I also kept the remaining amount as savings.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from the way it would have been had I not received the transfers in that if it wasn't for GD, I wouldn't be having the hopes of achieving my dream which is to peruse hair and beauty course. In order to enroll for the course, I'm required with 28000 KES and I'm glad and proud I have been able to save 24000 KES from the GD transfers. Thanks to GD I'm soon achieving my dream.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
At the moment all my hopes and goals are focused on pursuing my dream of enrolling for hair and beauty course. Therefore, my main goal is to save enough money so that come January next year I'll use them to enroll in the college. Currently, there are only hair salons in our area but we do not have any beauty parlor in the area leading to people going all the way to town to seek these services. I believe that by the end of next year I'll have acquired enough skills which enable to open a hair and beauty parlor in our area.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Currently, I do not have a reliable source of income. Instead, I rely on casual work which is not well paying. I have always had a passion for hair and beauty but I wasn't lucky to join college to pursue it because I could afford the fee neither did I have anyone who could pay the fee for me. The moment when I started receiving the money from GD I knew my prayer was answered and I promised myself to give it the first priority. I have been since then been saving the transfers including the recent transfer so that I'll use it in January to enroll for hair and beauty college.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goals are to open a salon and a beauty shop in my village in Mlango Kubwa, the beauty shop will be the first to be opened in the area.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I can now study hairdressing and beauty that I have always wanted to study, and open up my own salon and beauty shop.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfers to pay for a hairdressing course that I have always wanted to study. I have had a passion for beauty and hairdressing, and I know how to plait hair but I have not been so perfect in this. I have always felt like I needed to perfect this art further, by learning more about hairdressing and beauty. I used to sell water here in my village in Mlango kubwa until the month of August, last year in 2018, when one of the water pipes broke and it has not been repaired since. Since that time, I was just in the house taking care of my 3 year old child as I looked for employment elsewhere. I am grateful to Give Directly that I can now study hairdressing and beauty which will enable me to open up my own salon and a separate place for beauty where I can offer these services. Here in my village in Mlango Kubwa, there is no salon that offers beauty services such as facials, manicure or pedicure. I am taking a course in beauty so I can be the first person to open up an outlet that will offer these services.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was still asleep and I was woken up by a phone call that came to my phone at 6:00 AM. I picked the call and once I was done talking, I checked my phone and I saw a message had come in. I opened the message and realized it was the money that had come in. I was very happy and at that time I knew that truly the transfers were real and that I could trust Give Directly to keep their word. I immediately went online to the recipient's 'WhatsApp' group to thank Give Directly. I was very happy.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I always wanted to study hair dressing and beauty since I know how to do hair ever since. Once have gotten skills professionally would open up a hair dressing shop and then small shoes polar to sustain myself.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is insecurity because my area is known for these crooked young boys, these boys would attack you without a reason because of jobless and some areas are just black spots. They'll do this on daily occasions without care and would tent to tress some of us thinking that we might report them to the police. This creates tension within the community in general. Even though some have been reported to the authority nothing positive has been done yet. This makes me feel uneasy even setting up a business within this locality of mine and hope some day I will move elsewhere.
What are your greatest ambitions?
I would want to have one of the best salon in my area and help those within my reach especially my fellow young ladies who struggle with their lives on how to put meals on their tables as well clearing their own bills. I believe I will create employment within my locality to train and enhance skills within my environments. I will also assist my parents pay school fees to my siblings.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
Normally I always like watching TV doing my house chores since am not that committed. Sometimes I do people's hair and appreciate me if they can though I do it like leasure since it's my hobby to do that that's why I want to go do more studies on the same.
