I was at home when I received the transfer. I was happy and the first thing that come to my mind was to pay the $20 debt I had in school fees. I have five children, two did not complete their education due to lack of school fees and three are in school. I burn, package, and sell charcoal at the market where I get a profit of $4 a sack. I used the recent transfer to pay school fees which was $15, water at $5, and $10 for food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very excited when I first received the transfer. It brought the hope of taking my children back to school after they had stayed back home for 3 days due to the tuition fees arrears. The money came as a surprise and I thanked God for it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Paying for my children's school fees is the biggest difference in my daily life. It has been a challenge raising the fees since I do not make much from selling charcoal which is my only source of income. My children had not gone to school two days before the transfers due to the arrears, and I am glad the money from GiveDirectly came on time. I am hoping to clear the fee balance in two months.

I spent KES 2000 of the transfer to pay off part of the school fees arrears for my three primary school children. My charcoal burning business has not been doing well for sometimes, and I was unable to pay the school fence which piled up to KES. 5000. What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of six children. Three of them are in school. School fees has been a big burden for me hence receiving this money means a big relief for me. I will spend the whole amount of the first transfer (3,000 KES) for school fees. This money will also go a long way in helping me feed my family. Every day I purchase food stuff because my farm has not been productive due to little rain.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite struggling to pay school fees, I am glad that my daughter will be completing his primary education in November. He joined the final year this month and I feel excited about it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My children are always in and out of school due to school fees arrears. This is a major challenge which gives me a lot to ponder about. I feel bad about it because this affects their studies. I depend on my spouse who is a casual labourer in town to send me money. The kind of jobs he does are inconsistent there making it difficult to continuously satisfy the family's needs. I am a farmer back here at home but the dry climatic conditions makes it very unreliable to depend on our three acre farm.
