How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a dairy cows. This has been my wish all along. I had saved some money but it was still not enough. This breed is from Canada and it is high in milk production compared to other breeds around. When this dairy cow reproduce I will be in a position to milk more than twenty litres a day. This will be an additional source of income for me. I will save the money to pay school fees for my children and even buy another dairy cow. Farming is a business and I believe this is the direction I should be heading. I have so many friends with the best breeds and we usually share ideas on how to make this production the best. I also used part of the money to build a structure where this cow will be shading and feeding. This will minimise the infections and reduce stress from the cow. Finally I plough my farm and planted nappier grass and other plants for feeding. This cuts the cost of buying feeds from the Agro-vet daily. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has made my wish come true.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to buy dairy cows and pay school fees for my children. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I part of spend the money I received from GiveDirectly to buy a heifer at a cost of 45000 Ksh. This is the breed that I had always wish to have from Canada. When this dairy cow reproduce I will be in a position to have enough milk for my family and sell the rest to earn an income to meet all my daily household expenditure and even pay school fees for my children. I am so happy because my dream has come out successfully. I also spend part of the transfer to build a structure where this dairy cow will be feeding. This structure ensures that my dairy cow stays in one place to minimise infections. The rest of the money I plough my farm and planted nappier grass. This will cut the cost of buying feeds at the Agro-vet.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfers was around six fourty nine in the morning while going to work. Immmediately I arrived at my work place I requested for a leave and went back home to inform my family of the good news. I and my family were very excited because my dream of owning a high quality Fresian heifer was more real than ever.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am very optimistic about my future because the heifer I bought has adapted well to my environment contrary to my expectations. Before I used to have many questions without answers. I used to have very good long-term plans but I couldn't execute because I couldn't afford. This led to a lot of sleepless nights but now I have peace of mind especially after buying the heifer because milk is now like a precious gem in my locality. In ten next years time from milk production I will have bought my own car because the Holland Fresian appreciates in value every year.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 210USD on renting land, ploughing, purchase and planting of Boma Rhodes seeds. This is because Boma Rhodes grass is the best variety of grass for dairy cows hence will boost milk production. 250USD was spent on purchase of a Holland Fresian heifer which is of high quality in terms of milk production as compared the Canadian Fresian which I initially had. This is dairy farming has been my main income source for a longtime.I also spent 30USD on clothing for my family because clothing was quite an issue and 20USDon food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Dairy farming has been my passion and my dream ever since I was a young boy. Receiving this money would mean so much to me and my family as well because it will enable me to realize my dream. I plan to put up dairy structures with feeding traps inside at a total cost of 29500 shillings. I also plan to buy a water storage tank going for 28000 shillings. This will solve water shortages for my cows. This is a business opportunity that not many people have ventured into, and it will boost my family's income. I expect to get milk of around 20 liters every day which I will sell in our local market for 45 shillings a liter. That will give me a total of 900 shillings daily. I will use half of that amount to buy animal feeds and save the rest for a rainy day.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy during the day because this is the time I engage myself in different manual jobs in a bid to provide for my family. Toiling all day for their sake brings me the utmost happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Providing for my family has been the greatest hardship I have had to face in my life. My family consists of young children and seeing them go to bed hungry is not something any parent would want to experience. Skipping meals has almost become a norm because of poor production from the farm. This is due to persistent droughts that are witnessed in this part of the world. I farm an area of a 0.5-acre piece of land and each harvesting season I have never been a happy man because I always come out empty-handed.
