How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently I do burn and sell charcoal, but which is not a very sustainable business as many of my neighbour are still in the same field of work. I would love to be able to start another business of selling second clothes in the nearby market. This will ensure that I get to provide for my family's basic needs with much ease and see them through their education without disruptions.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
By giving the unconditional transfers, one is able to plan accordingly as per their urgent needs without any limitations. Everyone was delighted and grateful that they had chosen our village from among many.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Earlier on when I received my first transfer, I started building myself a house but I did not manage to have it completed since I had some more pressing needs at the moment and had to postpone the project till when I received the second transfer. After getting the second transfer, I used Ksh 27,000 to finish it up. I also bought a piece of land (1 acre) for Ksh 20,000 which I could use for farming. Among other objectives that I had was to buy a goat for Ksh 3,000. I am grateful that this transfers transformed my life in a great way.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 5 in the evening when I was preparing porridge for my children when I heard my phone vibrating continuously. I asked my elder son to confirm what the notifications were all about. He could believe what he saw, it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was so excited and I even stopped the task I was handling and started celebrating for I was sure I would build a new house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life that I will forever be proud to mention is the fact that I now have a spacious permanent house. It has been my wish to construct for so many years but I could not afford to purchase any of the required materials. Therefore for all those years, I have been living in a temporary hut which was very small. It has been so tough especially during the winter seasons because we had to squeeze in one corner of the hut with my three children. We could barely sleep at all till the rains stopped. This situation has been affecting my kids psychologically from the reports I received from their teachers, my major worry was that it would affect their performance as well. Being a single parent who depends on the charcoal business, it has never been easy for me to fend for the family's needs. I have therefore been praying to God to see us through during these tough times in our lives. I am so thankful for He finally answered my prayer which has retired our dignity and joy in life. We longer have to worry about the rains and all the humiliations.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying iron sheets at KES 12000, building poles at KES 3000 and all the necessary materials. This was purposely for the construction of a new house the initial one was just a temporary small hut. I have been through lots of suffering including the harsh weather among others. It is now a relief for my entire family because we can at least smile. Also, I bought a goat that will be serving as my asset that I can depend on anytime. Additionally, I had to purchase a mattress at KES 6000 which has now replaced the old mats that have been together with four children. Also, I cleared gees of KES 3000 for my three school kids and I am glad that is settled in school. With the remaining amount, I bought sufficient food that will take us to the next harvesting season.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a single parent living with my daughter and four grandsons. We are all living in a very small house with no partition. When getting into the house, one has to bend himself. I am a casual worker making charcoal for sale. I earn approximately KES 3000. This money can only cater to food. My grandsons are schooling at Mwenge primary and everyone is supposed to pay KES 350 per term. With little income, I cannot build a spacious house for the family. Upon receiving my money, I will build a two-bedroom house worthy of KES 80000. It will accommodate even my visitors. I will also use KES 30000 to buy ten goats as an investment. The investment will help me raise school fees for my grandsons when they join secondary school. Thanks to Givedirectly for their program that aims to eliviate my poverty.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter got a job as a housemaid at Mombasa in January 2022. She brings food for the family every month. I am happy that my family can now take two meals per day. My daughter's job brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest challenge is lack of job that guarantees me daily income. I do make charcoal for sale but the biggest challenge is the availability of raw materials. No forest in our village to make charcoal. It is now five months when I last made charcoal.
