How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a lot of goals but how can I accomplish them without money ? As I said earlier , I live at my parents' home and its so stressful . I hope to buy a piece of land build a house there and just relocate . This would require approximately $1,000 . Since I'm now expectant , I would also hope to start a small business but I do not know where to get this money from .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly does everything well . You have helped everyone in my village with money , which they have used to meet their financial needs . My heart is filled with gratitude when I hear the mention of Give Directly because you have eradicated poverty from this village. I build a house , bought a bed and mattress . I never knew that one day I could be able to sleep comfortably ! There is nothing wrong that you need to correct. May God bless you .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm a charcoal seller and sometimes , I also sell alcohol . I'm the sole bread winner for my family . Actually I'm not married , so my family is made of my child and I . When I received this money I was so happy because I knew that I would finally solve most of my problems. I have always wished to venture in livestock keeping because they will give birth and I can later sell them to pay school fees for my child . So I spent $160 on four goats . I also had less water storage containers and this would make me suffer during drought . So I wanted to fully secure my water storage capacity . I bought a big water tank worth $120 . Previously , I used to sleep on a rope bed and a mat , and sleeping was so uncomfortable . So I bought a mattress and three bed sheets worth $75 . Getting food for us is usually a tough struggle I wanted to ensure that I buy something that would take us for a long while , hence I used $70 to buy one sac of maize flour . I also spent $15 on a high quality thermos which I now used to keep our tea home. Even when my child wakes up in the morning , I do not have to strain preparing tea that early , because we use the tea I had prepared the previous evening and stored in the thermos . I have saved $15 which I'm planning to buy a beautiful 'Christmas dress' for my child (a dress specifically worn on December 25th) . I'm spending the rest of the money on food items .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I learned that I had received my first cash transfer at exactly 5 in the evening. I was so shocked and happy because I was not sure if I would receive the cash as promised. I had to recheck the message only to confirm it was true. I couldn't hold my joy because I knew I would finally fulfil my dream of conducting my own house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now sleep under a very decent shelter. It has been my dream to construct one but I couldn't purchase all the materials needed. Previously, I used to sleep at my brother's house together with my son since mine collapsed sometimes back. As a single parent, I had to struggle to bring food to the table for my one child and my salary could barely sustain our basic needs. Therefore I was forced to stay with my brother who also has a family. At times, I felt I was a burden to them, apart from that, there was no privacy. I was also worried about how life will be once my son grows up. I am now so thankful to God for bringing this organisation to my life because if it were not for them, my life would still be miserable.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 12000 of my first cash transfer to purchase a bed and mattress. It is now a relief for me and my daughter because, for years, we have been sleeping on the floor. I used to encounter back pains and fatigue and sometimes I was not able to perform any heavy task as a result. I also bought iron sheets, nails, and all the labour charges at a total of KES 32000. I had intended to build a new house because I have been sleeping at my brother's house for years since mine collapsed sometimes back. I also paid the school fees of KES 2000 for my child who is in grade two. With the remaining amount of money, I had to buy food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A decent house for my family is what receiving this money means to me. I separated from my husband for 3 years due to family issues and this forced me to come back to my maternal home. Currently, I am residing in a small house( one room) that is leaking during the rainy season. This house is a shame to me because there is no place for visitors to rest. I have wished to own a better house but due to financial instability, I have not achieved my dream. I will use KES 50000 to build a two-bedroom house with an iron sheet roof that will accommodate my family of 2 comfortably. I will also use KES 10000 to buy a new bed and mattress to replace the old ones that do not give me nice sleep. I will also clear the school fees balance for my child so that he study with easy because he won't be sent back home to collect school fees for a year. This is going to give me room to save the little coins I have for next year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last week, we received food from the Government. This brought joy to my life. I was one of the beneficiaries whereby I was given 10 kilograms of maize and 5 kilograms of beans. I still have stock and I have not been skipping meals for the whole of last week.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It's now 3 years since I separated from my husband. Life has been tough for me. Raising my child single-handed is challenging for me. My biggest challenge currently is providing food for him and paying school fees. I depend on charcoal work. This earns me as little as KES 2000-3000 per month which is very little to sustain all our needs.
