How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With the promising success of my kiosk business, I am now determined to take the next big step and expand my venture further. My plan for the coming year and the year beyond is to add more stock to the kiosk, broadening its offerings to cater to a wider range of customers. To do this, I am anticipating a successful harvest of tomatoes from my 1/4 acre of land, cultivated with the help of the second transfer, and I am optimistic about generating around $400 in profit from it. I will use this profit to expand the kiosk business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GD's provision of the transfer has been truly commendable, empowering our community and paving the way for significant investments. I am very grateful for the support, through it, we have ventured into substantial investments that promise a brighter future for us all.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the entire transfer of $450 to start a small kiosk business in a center close to my home. I spent $20 to rent a shop and used the remaining $430 to stock the shop with goods. It's been two months since I opened the shop, and I'm thrilled with its success. On average, I make $3 in daily sales. This thriving business has become a lifeline for my family, allowing me to provide for our basic needs. The reason I started this shop was to move away from the strenuous work I used to do, such as working on people's land and burning charcoal to make a living. Now, I can rest more and use less energy. Having my own business has been a fantastic experience, and I feel a sense of freedom and an opportunity to build a better life.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My plan for the future is to maximize the potential of tomato farming and continue saving from the income it generates. Over the coming years and beyond, I aim to establish a shop business as an additional source of income for my family. I believe that diversifying our income streams will enable us to adequately meet our family's basic needs and ensure access to quality education for my children. By combining the success of the tomato farming venture with the establishment of a shop business, I hope to create a more stable and sustainable financial situation.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I love the fact that GD has consistently fulfilled their promises, delivering what was initially communicated. Furthermore, I admire the conduct of their employees working in the field, as they demonstrate a high level of interactivity and understanding towards the beneficiaries. However, considering the current challenging circumstances with the increasing cost of living and skyrocketing prices of goods, I do have a wish for the organization to provide additional aid. While acknowledging and appreciating the assistance we currently receive, it is becoming increasingly difficult to cope with the rising expenses
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfer, I used $200 to clear the school arrears for my two children who attend a primary school academy. This was necessary to ensure that they could continue their education without being sent back home, which was demoralizing for both them and me. I am incredibly pleased that they can now focus on their studies with renewed concentration. In addition, I had previously planted tomatoes on my farm using the initial transfers. However, I lacked the funds to purchase essential items such as top dressers and pesticides to optimize the crop yield. To address this, I utilized $150 from the transfer to procure these necessary supplies. With the remaining amount, I used to purchase food for my family of seven, ensuring ensuring food security and well-being of my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt grateful to God and overjoyed when I received a message while I was weeding vegetables on my farm. As soon as I read the message, I was certain it was from the program we had enrolled in with GiveDirectly, as it was the only money I was expecting. I was with my child, and my husband was out working as a motorcycle taxi driver at the time. I called him to share the news, and since he didn't have any customer at the moment, he came home as right after hanging up. We still needed to discuss our spending plan and withdrew the money the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my everyday life is the clearance of a school fee debt for my twins and the buying of enough food for my family of five. I am relieved that my children are now attending all classes and do not have to stay at home owing to a lack of school payments. GiveDirectly has done us a huge service, and even if I fail to secure the hard-to-find casual work, we still have enough food to last us until we get an additional income to replenish our food baskets.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Our reliance on subsistence farming, which was hampered by terrible weather conditions, and the motorcycle taxi services my husband provided had never provided us with sufficient income to satisfy all of our financial responsibilities. Crop cultivation has failed repeatedly for the past year due to a shortage of rainfall, forcing my family of five to rely on buying foodstuff. I cleared the $40 school fee arrears for my twins, who are currently in nursery school, as soon as I received the first transfer. It was a relief because they were no longer forced to stay at home owing to a lack of school payments. I also built a raised foundation for my water tank outside my house to collect rainwater from the roof. The higher base prevents rainfall from splashing and contaminating the pure water in the tank, which we have always been forced to dump. I spent $14 for two bags of cement and $5 for labor. In addition, I paid $61 for a sack of maize, which we are still eating, and I kept the remainder to cover any emergencies and refill any depleted household products.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Receiving this money means an expansion in my grocery business. I started it with little capital two years ago, but due to school fees, it has not grown. I plan on using all the transfers to purchase stock, and in return, my profits will triple. Thereafter, this will enable me to build up a toilet and pay school fees of $500 for my school-going children. I am so thankful to Givedirectly for it has come at the time when I needed it most. I initially had planned on taking a soft loan from a microfinance bank but the transfer has saved me the agony of living in debts.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Every day in the morning when I wake up in good health, I thank God for the gift of life. My prayer always has been to be in a God position to fend for my family of six. I can go about my daily chores and operate my grocery shop comfortably. At the end of the day, they will get food to eat and other basic needs like school fees.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The scarcity of water is the most challenging for me . The rains have not been consistent for the past three years and as a result, the rivers have dried up completely. We walk long distances to get water for home use and even livestock. Sometimes we are forced to buy water at $ 0.60 per twenty-liter which is quite expensive. If we had water availability things could be better as we would be having enough food.
