How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had completed a course in tailoring and getting the capital to start my own tailoring shop seemed expensive for me. However, upon receiving the transfers, I managed to purchase a sewing machine which will now help me on starting the shop. I also purchased some textile materials for the shop. I am certain that I will be generating an income through this shop. I have also been using kerosene lamps for long. I was always paying for the cost of kerosene daily. My life is now different because I no longer incur any cost of kerosene. I now have a solar panel that provides lighting for my household. My children are now studying comfortably. Apart from all these, I also own livestock which include goats and two heifers. I am expecting them reproduce and help me in meeting future financial needs like educating my children who are still young.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has empowered us financially and lifted us from the poverty that had stricken us. We've been able to build ourselves and our families through this money. We now enjoy decent shelters, starting small businesses and also owning livestock as living assets to us. These are some of the things we now own that will always be in our hearts even after it has phased out. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent KES 15000 to purchase a cow that I am currently rearing in my homestead. My expectation is that this cow will reproduce and have many of them. I can sell the offspring to sort me out in case of a financial need. Besides, I will also be getting milk from this cow. In addition to this, I also bought a solar panel at KES 26000 which I am currently using in lighting my household. Besides lighting, I also charge phones from neighbours thus earning an income. I spent the remaining amount to buy daily foodstuffs for my family as well as paying for other household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
For the past year, I have been staying at home without any job despite the fact that I had the skills on tailoring. I could not buy my own machine or open my own tailoring shop. Through the transfer, I bought a new sewing machine and opened my own tailoring shop. Acquiring this machine is the biggest daily difference for I am now fully engaged and working.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the notification early in the morning. I was greatly impressed and surprised by the huge sum of money on my phone. I was filled with happiness when I saw the notification that GiveDirectly had finally sent the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to buy a sewing machine. I am well trained to be a tailor and my desire was to open my own tailoring shop. Initially, I was just staying at home without a job despite having the skills. I have now opened my own shop to serve my own clients. I will earn an income out of this since I will be self-employed. This is far much better compared to staying at home. I am expecting to add textile materials to my shop. In addition to this, I bought two calves. Hopefully, I start milking them in future. I also replaced my beddings for they were old and worn out. I purchased a new wooden bed and a new mattress to replace the old traditional bed. At least now I can afford to sleep peacefully and comfortably. I also did a small shopping on food and other basic necessities for the family with the remaining transfers.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My life will improve horrendously, my ambition is to start my own tailoring shop, I have the skills to match it but resources have been a problem. Apart from starting the tailoring business my husband and I have been wanting to buy oxen to help us in farming Getting my transfer will help realise that dream of being a tailor. I will buy a sewing machine and start a dress making business. My family and I will also invest in farming tools for the next season hence a fruitful harvest.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Am the happiest at night. This is simply because I have to wake up early, attend to household chores and head to the farm. I work the whole day and retire to bed after preparing dinner. Once am done with any chores then I rest, feel at peace and that is mostly at night.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Not having a reliable source of income or job security has been a constraint to my family. My husband has recently been employed as a shop attendant in Bamba town. That alone is helpful but we still struggle since am a stay at home mother with no job. My husband uses most of his money on transport since he has to come home everyday. The little we get as a family can only Carter for food with nothing else to invest.
