How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is better and full of hope because I have already set up a welding business which will start running as soon as power is connected into the work shop. This business will generate income to the family to cater for most needs like food, medical bills, school fees and many more. It will also relieve me from the stress and I have a feeling that I will leave longer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well to visit people at individual household. This has helped them to understand the poverty level in my village. It has also promoted openness because people are free to interact with them. There is nothing they are not doing well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer for paying a debt of UGX 390,0000. I used some money for connecting electricity in my work shop and bought materials for starting up a welding business . I bought food and spent UGX 50,000 on transport.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I have acquired most of the needed materials to run my welding workshop. I am expecting to earn income that I believe will improve my family's standard of living. Family needs like food, health and clothing are going to be met in time. Previously, I didn't have enough money to buy materials for my welding workshop much as I had the machine. The little money I got from agricultural produce was spent on my children's school fees and buying food.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my money, I became very happy because I used to hear testimonies about GiveDirectly giving cash to people in near by villages. It was a dream come true on my side that moment and couldn't sleep the whole night.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer to purchase welding material worth UGX 1,300,000 for our welding workshop. In addition, I paid school fees for my daughter UGX 170,000, medical bills at UGX 100,000, a debt at UGX 100,000, transport and bought food at UGX 30,000.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means completing plastering my house. I sleep in a house that is not plastered which makes it cold at night hence my children fall sick often. I will buy two oxen in order to facilitate early crop planting. I have been hiring oxen but it is very expensive for me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of the day is in the morning after waking up. I am happy at this time because, my mind is fresh after having enough rest through out the night. I am then energized to go out to my garden again and dig in order to make ends meet.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge in my life is lack of a sustainable source of income to support family needs like paying school fees, medical bills, to mention. My main source of income is farming which is not reliable enough to produce better yields due to droughts or floods.
