How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different in that I now own cattle again. I never imagined I would own cattle again in my home. I had exhausted all the money I received after selling the remaining two cows I had. I only depended on burning and selling charcoal; which was not giving back very good money. I am grateful to Give Directly that I now have cattle again.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly did well to give me money that I did not have. I used the money to purchase cattle that I once owned and lost in the drought that we experienced early last year, in 2018. I also completed building my house. I never thought I would own cattle again after the ones I owned perished in the drought. I see nothing that Give Directly has done wrong, I only feel that there should be more follow up visits from the Give Directly officers to inspect how we have spent the transfers. They should then reward those who have spent their transfers well with additional monetary benefits, in order to boost their projects further.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfers to pay school fees for my children, to shop for their school needs, and to purchase windows and a door to complete a house that I had begun building last year. I had started building my house sometime mid last year even before I got enrolled into the Give Directly program. I owned four cows initially that I used to hire out for farm services for a fee that would sustain me and my family. But in the beginning of last year, we experienced severe drought here in Kilifi county, and I lost two of my cattle. I then resorted to selling the remaining two cattle and I managed to start constructing my house with the money that I received from the cattle. I could not complete building the house however, because I exhausted all the money I had. I have now completed building the house with these transfers. I also bought two cattle from the first transfers that I will use for business. I am truly grateful to Give Directly.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Getting the transfers rejuvenated my energy to still work hard on the new projects and even on the old projects which I had given up on. I am now feeling strong with full hopes that I will complete alltge started projects which is the biggest difference inmy daly life compared to the low spirited work I had before receiving the transfers.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
We received the money with great happiness. We slept the previous night being sure that we will wake to a normal day where we will be going to work as usual but that never happened, what I saw in my phone when I woke up could not allow me to go to the farm but had to celebrate, thanking God that He has been faithful to us. I promised myself that I will not use the money in any unplanned expense but first, I had to give tithesto the church as a way of thanking God for the great provision.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
After the dead of my oxen during the prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall which led to shortage of water and foodstuff for the livestock, I decided to spend part of the transfer I received from GD in purchasing two oxen to reduce cut on the cost of hiring from my neighbors whenever I want to till my piece of land and sometimes opting to use hand tools which normally takes longer time even beyond the intended planting seasons. I used part of the remaining in paying for the labor which I hired to make bricks in preparation to construct a new house for my family. The house we have been living in was too old and in bad condition since the reeds which we used for roofing is now rotting and keeps falling off the roof every other time making the condition not conducive for my family. with tghe tratnsfers we received most of the things are going to change and we thank GiveDirectly for picking on our village.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my life will change for the better. This is because I will invest the money in livestock business that will give me continuous income. The profit from this business will sustain my family's basic needs. I will be able to pay school fees for my children, buying food and also finishing my house with doors and windows.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am back home from my farm. Joining my wife and children strengths the love bond. We take supper together and share advices with my family. Knowing that I have done my parental roles makes me feel very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of permanent job that can be reliable. I am just a standard three dropout and this have forced me to doing hardship jobs with a very little fee.
