How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has been impacted highly in a way that I could not have imagined. In future, I plan to build a kiosk outside my house so that I would expand my business by selling milk and other household items. This would mean that I would be saving money from my business to arrive at this dream. I am grateful for the opportunity that lifted our living standards highly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We are grateful for the support that has lifted our living standards greatly. The transfer was unconditional, thus allowing people to choose for themselves how to utilize their money. We are grateful for the kind gesture. The organization was well organised, thus we did not experience any challenges or anything that needed to be corrected.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on selling milk for my survival, It is not an easy task because it involves waking up very early in the morning in search of the commodity. I am a mother of five children. When GiveDirectly promised me the unconditional transfer, I thought about purchasing a dairy cow, this is because I knew that it would attract more profit to my business. Therefore, I bought a cow worth $350 to add to the one that I had. This was not possible before due to school fees responsibilities. Additionally, I used $100 on my business and used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes. I am contented with what I have achieved so far, thus I am forever grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm and I was at home in the kitchen preparing tea when suddenly I heard my phone ringing in my purse notifying me of a new message. I have made it a habit of going around everywhere with my phone since I do not want to miss picking up calls or reading new messages sent to me. As a result, I decided to purchase a small purse for placing my phone which I usually carry around. So when I heard my phone ringing, I stopped whatever I was doing and I checked it. I was surprised and I could not believe my eyes when I read that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly in my mobile money account. I was full of joy that I immediately went and told my husband who was in the main house the good news. He was so happy and we celebrated together giving thanks to God. Soon enough, we heard other people in the neighborhood ululating in celebration. That was the happiest day in our village.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our daily lives as a family. The heifer that we bought with the transfer is about to calve and when it does, we will be able to get more milk for sale at the business and make more money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 35000 of our recent transfer on buying a heifer that is going to be of great help to us in the future when it calves. I will be able to get more milk for sale in my business of buying and selling milk and get more income. Other than that, I took KES 10000 that I invested in my business which had gone down due to a lack of money for paying my milk suppliers who thus decided to supply the milk to other traders. We are, however, glad that the business has picked up since this is solely what we depend on to earn a living, that is, to buy food and to occasionally support the upkeep of our grandchildren. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying clothes for ourselves and the essential household items, that is, sugar, soap, tea leaves, etc. For this, we are so much grateful to GiveDirectly for everything.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For 5 years now I have been engaging in the small-scale milk business. I collect 40 liters of milk from various households and sell them to the nearby cooling plant for a profit. I am now happy that this money will enable me to expand the business by additional 50 liters of milk daily. Being elderly I am unable to carry the cans of milk on my back as I used to before. Therefore with this money, I will be able to purchase a second-hand motorcycle to enable me to transport the milk to the cooling plant.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The closure of schools in the past one month has led to an increase in demand for milk .This has brought joy into my life because I have been able to get a profit of KES 300 daily as compared to KES 200 I used to previously earn.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is the biggest challenge am currently facing . This has affected us for more than 5 years now, it started after my husband lost his job in a tea estate company due to his health condition. Therefore, we have been trying to make ends meet through the milk business which earns me KES 200 daily. This amount is insufficient to meet my household needs.
