How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I now have a good business that brings me an income. I can also generate some capital for another business from this particular business. This will ensure that I will live a life of no struggles as I hope to own multiple businesses in future from the proceeds from this business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has done well to improve our lives in the village. As a village, we did not expect that we would ever get such an amount of money, to improve our lives. A lot has changed in the village for the better, and we are grateful to Give Directly. I see no wrong that Give Directly has done.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfers to purchase two cows and to open up a shop. I opened up a shop by the roadside close to my home that stocks commodities such as cooking pots, spoons, knives, plates, cups, basins and other items required in a home. I thought of this particular business because we travel so far from the village here to get such kind of commodities. I felt this business would do well here if I brought these commodities closer to the villagers here; already the business is doing well. As a widow, I have struggled quite a bit with my five children to make ends meet. I would sell 'mandazi' or sardines from my homestead or I would hawk these around in my village. I lacked the money to open up a shop. I am happy now that I received enough money to enable me open up a shop at a central place that can be accessible to most villagers.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My project has now begun. This is the biggest difference in my daily life. If all goes well, I will be able to generate income to lift our standard of living. I plan to use my oxen to plough farms of people who do not intend to own their own hence need my services. I will earn some cash from there to meet our needs. I am grateful for the funds.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was happy to receive GiveDirectly transfer. It gave me confidence that all that I have desired to accomplish will finally come to pass - I have the means now. And I am grateful for that. Things were tough earlier due to lack of funds yet I have many children. The financial demands of school fee has been burdensome for me. This transfer therefore has given me financial freedom to obtain what I have been desiring for long (the oxen & plough for farming).
What did you spend your first transfer on?
The first transfer that GiveDirectly sent me enabled me to buy 2 oxen and a plough for farming. I will use them to plough my farm and cut ploughing expense that we have been incurring by paying someone with oxen to plough for us. We will then divert funds that would have gone to ploughing, to weed the crops because the oxen cannot weed the crops.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to start up business projects that will upgrade the family's well-being. After my husband died, I've had financial constrains since I depended on him in almost everything.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. I enjoy spending time with my family at this moment, having successful achieved my objectives of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I've faced in my life is the inability to get sustainable source of income after my husband died two years ago. I've three children in secondary school, and being their sole provider, it has always been hard to meet all their basic needs.
