How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to buy 2 acres of land. This is because I want to own my own land and not to be enslaved by ancestral land. This will cost me approximately kshs 300,000. I can practise farming there.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What Give Directly is doing well is that it is helping a lot of people. It has saved a lot of people from poverty. This is unique and selfless. Keep it up, there is nothing to improve. Everything about Give Directly is perfect.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used this transfer in a manner that I thought would leave a positive impact in my life. My house needed repair, I used kshs 16,000 to buy 12 bags of cement and paid kshs 16,000 for labour. This helped to repair my house. I have 4 primary school children on class 7,5,1 and nursery school respectively, I used kshs 4,000 to clear their school fees balance. I bought 1 bag of 90kg maize flour and sugar worth kshs 10,000. I also want to venture in livestock, therefore I bought 2 goats @ 2,000 and 2 ducks @ 2,500.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I left home very early one morning for the shamba leaving my phone since there were some signs of rain. When I returned at around 7 pm, I found a message on the phone, and upon checking it was the transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and energized and the tiredness escaped. This is because I had some plans which I could not do them initially due to lack of money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I can testify of GiveDirectly is paying school fees for my children. It had been like a culture for my children to be sent out of school for fees thus missing exams as well as not performing well. When I received the transfer, I opted to change the culture thus making a difference in their educational progress. Seeing them missing examinations did not give me peace of mind. My financial position could not educate them because I rely on casual labor and farming which depends on rainfall thus could not cater to children's education. I am very grateful for the support I received from GiveDirectly since it enabled my children to resume studies and stay in school undisturbed till did their exams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, the priority was school fees for my four primary school children. They had been out of school for a while because of the school fees plus some arrears that added up from the previous years. Therefore I opted to pay the arrears plus the required fees amounting to KES 10000.00 for them to resume studies. Thereafter, I decided to buy two bulls for plowing purposes. The aim is not to do business with them but to use them in my farming since I am a farmer. If I manage to get more yields I will sell some and leave the rest for family use. I also bought 10 bags of cement for KES 6500.00 to plaster my house. By so doing, the house becomes more firm and stable hence cannot be easily shaken by whirls of wind which sometimes bring down some houses. For the remaining amount, I reserved it for family use.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Education for my children is very paramount to me. I have always admired to give the best education I never had to my children. Surprisingly, my financial capability has left me to offer whatever is available. Therefore, with this transfer from givedirectly will boost my desire to make sure all of them complete their schooling. This will means even taking all my transfer to their schools.
What is the happiest part of your day?
During the last end of term exam, one of my boys emerged as the best student in his class. This really motivated me more despite all the challenges I face as a parent. I have hope that one day they will get their desired jobs and help their siblings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having the desire to do something but lack the energy is a very tough moment. I have very bright children who have good motive to achieve their dreams. But the biggest challenge here is when sometimes they have to go to school without eating or going to bed without eating. With my kind of jobs I do, I make very little money that can not sustain all the needs for my family. This is very stressful and at some point it led me to depression.
