How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes. I have a new goal which is to start up a mobile money business. I believe the commission I will earn from it at the end of every month will help meet my household needs. Though I am a teacher it is challenging to meet the household needs since I am the sole income earner. My spouse is currently a full-time student at the university hence I am the one responsible for her college fees. With the additional income, I will have a load off my shoulders.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly is doing good work by giving people money with no strings attached to it. I also like the fact that after they have sent the transfer they conduct a follow-up to check if the money reached the intended person. This not only shows concern, but they also get to motivate people to be spending the money wisely.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My spouse is a student in one of the universities, and I am the one fully responsible for her college fees. The moment when I received the second transfer I spent KES 25000 on clearing her next semesters' fees. I now have enough time to raise fees for her other semesters, and she will also be able to concentrate on her studies. KES 30000 of the money I used to purchase two dairy cows for rearing. I had one previously and since they are beneficial, I felt it was wise to add more. I am now assured of a constant supply of milk both for sale and family use for the whole year.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As a school teacher, I spend most of my time with my students. I was in class one morning when I received a message notification. I checked my phone and was extremely happy to see that I had received KES 55,000. I could not believe I finally had the money to clear my school fees arrears. I had to take a moment just to compose myself.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am so grateful for the fact that this cash transfer has enabled my wife and I to achieve our professional dreams. We put on hold our dreams of starting a family so that we could focus on getting our careers on course. Unfortunately, these have been derailed by financial instability. I am a teacher who is employed by the school's Board of Directors. My salary is just KES 10,000 a month. I couldn't afford to clear my college fees arrears, so I could not obtain my certificate. Thanks to this transfer though, this is no longer the case. I have paid off the required amount and obtained other important documents that I need in order to be employed by the Teachers' Service Commission. I have also paid for my wife's school fees and she's on course to graduate. I'm so thankful for the progress we have made.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I finished my college education a while back, but sadly, could not obtain my certificate because I had school fees arrears. I am a teacher who earns KES 10,000 a month. So I was pleased to spend KES 30,000 to clear the same. I then spent KES 2,500 on obtaining other necessary documents such as my Teacher's Service Commission identification number and my certificate of good conduct. My wife is currently a college student, so I also spent KES 15,000 on paying for her tuition fees, so that she can complete her education.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a primary teacher currently serving casually at a nearby private school. I completed my education in the year 2017 with a lot of happiness knowing that I would secure a job immediately. Just after graduating our sole provider passed on leaving us with no one to rely on. Receiving this money means an assurance that I graduated since I am planning to use KES 20000 to clear my school fee arrears thus I will be able to collect my certificate. I am certain with my certificate, I will get my Teacher Service Commission Registration. This will give me peace and offer me better opportunities at my service since I will be in a position to prove my education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a teacher, my entire day is filled with a lot of activities right from classwork to co-curriculum activities. I am a game master in my school and the happiest part of my job is playing with my pupils. The happiest part of my day is in the evening during games time. This is the time I play around with children helping me to relax and refresh my mind.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I primarily relying on casual jobs to meet my family's needs. Currently serving as a teacher in a nearby private school with a monthly pay of KES 11000. This is an amount I am supposed to spend on household daily basic needs and to educate my sister and wife who are in different colleges. This is so costly for me compared to my income. The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life is the lack of enough resources to meet my family's needs.
