How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to repair a bysicle that I had been using to carry water and firewood for sale. It broke down recently and I haven't gotten money to repair it and that means that I have not been able to work hence no income is coming in. I want to repair it so that I can get back to track.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is uplifting the poor in the society and reviving their hopes though giving them unconditional cash transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Ever since I was born, I have never slept on a mattress nor had pleasure to have a modern chair even a plastic one. The hope of sleeping on mattress had slipping away because I am now old and unproductive and do I have children which I can count on because I have never married or had kids. sleeping on the floor on cartons was not easy as most of the days I would wake up with back aches. When I was enrolled in the program, my goal was to change my life so that I can age gracefully. I need to have a good house, a bed and a mattress and purchase some chairs and that's what exactly I did with my second transfer. I spend 12500 KES to buy a bed and a mattress, 12000 KES to roof the house that I had build and 10000 to buy two plastic chairs. I have been using the balance to get basic needs and I'm so great to GiveDirectly for changing my life and supporting me to age gracefully.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was awakened by the loud vibration from my mobile phone at around 6 AM. I was so curious because I had never received a message at such as hour and I wasn't expecting to hear from anyone either. I had to seek help from my nephew since I am illiterate. Upon checking he confirmed that I had received KES 55000 from Segovia Technology and on hearing this news I was overwhelmed with joy knowing very well that I would achieve most of my goals. I remember celebrating the while day with my family
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life has completely changed after renovating my house. Previously it was in a very bad state, it could leak excessively and all I could do was to seek shelter from the neighbors. It was a difficult condition for my family and we suffered a lot because of this especially in the winter seasons. My children had contracted pneumonia due to the cold nights and this has been stressful for their parents because we were always in and out of the hospital. I felt I was the cause of their suffering and this used to stress me a lot. Being a single parent has never neve been easy at all on my side because I have been depending on casual jobs to fend for my family. All these problems came to an end when GiveDirectly came into our lives. We are now comfortably sleeping in a better house without having to worry about the rains and even the insecurities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some spare parts for my bicycle which had bread down and I am glad it be repaired and is now operating so well. I also bought some building materials such as iron sheets, nails, and timber, sand, and cement a total of KES 20000. I later gave the mason KES 4000 as the labor charge This was for the renovation of my house since it had an old leaky roof. Also, I bought five goats and chicken at KES 15000 as the ling assets that I can now rely on any time when needs arise. Later on, I bought a solar panel that has been of help to me especially at night, and charging my phones and those of my friends at a fee. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For over five years, I have longed for a better house. However, this has not been possible due to poverty and lack of jobs. I am currently living in a small house that is roofed with worn out iron sheets. This house is not safe for me especially during rain season since the roof leaks and I cannot sleep comfortably. I depend on selling firewood to put food on the table which gives me little money that makes it difficult to save and build my dream house. I intend to use the cash transfer to build a better house that will cost KES 40000. I will then use the remaining transfer to invest in a charcoal selling business as an income generating activity.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually leave very early in the morning around 5am to go to the forest to collect firewood for sale. I then come back around 10am in the morning with a bundle of firewood on my bicycle ready for sale. During this time, I have time to cook food, eat and refresh myself. I then take my two goats and graze them for one hour and come back at noon. Therefore, midday is usually the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have ever faced is loss of my mother who has been my pillar. For over five years, I have been nursing my mother who was diagnosed of cancer. During that time, I used all my savings to meet her medical expenses that made me to forgo most of my basic needs. Consequently, my wife left me due to the condition of my mother's health. I have been surviving from my small business of selling firewood and friends to meet her medical bills. However, due to lack of enough money, my mother succumbed to the disease and died. Since then my life has been difficult as her health cost me all I had for my life.
