How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Originally, my main goal was to buy a dairy cow. Previously, I had two local cows that could not produce for me the amount of milk I wanted. In addition, I desired to increase my asset in terms of livestock. Immediately, I succeeded in this goal, I developed a second goal of promoting my business of selling cereals. From the business, I can always make a profit of KES 10,000 per month. Currently, I find it so easy to buy food and paying school fees for my 4 children who are currently in primary school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in alleviating poverty trough direct and unconditional cash transfer. It succeeds in doing that by enrolling all the deserving households into its program. Secondly, it nudges community members who are successful on how to spend the transfer for maximum benefits. the manner it operates. Personally, I have not so far observed what GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfers to buy additional goats and sheep. With the second transfers, I managed to buy 3 goats and 4 sheep worth KES 20,000. I prioritized to invest more in livestock asset because through them, I shall be able to raise some money when in great financial need. I also bought a bed, a table, new set of chairs and matress worth KES 20,000. In the past, I only had two old single chairs. The acquisition of these items have greatly improved the outlook of my house. As a result, I am no longer ashamed to hosting guests.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9.10a.m and I was planning to go till my farm ready for planting season when I had a notification message in my phone.Upon checking, it was a confirmation of receipt of promised cash transfer from Givedirectly officers and I was so happy.I informed my husband and he asked me to go and withdraw immediately.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is an added dairy cow to my livestock.I am hopefully that in future it will produce surplus milk so that we can sell to earn extra income.I am grateful for this support Givedirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the cash transfer, we spent Kshs.30,000 on obtaining a dairy cow to our existing livestock.We thought of adding one because the ones we had were not producing enough milk.We hope that in future it will give surplus of milk and we can sell it to earn a living.With Kshs.10,000 we used to purchase clothes for my entire family members.With the remaining amount we saved so that we could use to buy our daily household items as we anticipate for the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
These cash transfers will bring a paradigm shift in our lives in terms of empowering my family to be able to purchase a dairy cow. We have desired to have one but it has not been possible due to lack of finance to afford the cost of a dairy cow. The plan we have is to purchase a dairy cow worth KES 35000. This will produce milk for my family for consumption as well as for sale to earn income. We are also planning to establish a poultry unit with the extra money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a business lady involved in a small business of buying and selling maize grains. It is what I do on a daily basis. My happiest times is when I make big sales, this is usually realized by the close of business in the evening. It suffices to say therefore that my happiest days is in the evening.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Life is hard and biting. The emperor of all problems here is insufficient food especially maize which is our stable food. We are left with no option but to purchase, which we hardly afford. Since the outbreak of maize lethal necrosis disease some 10 years ago maize production has been a thing of the past. We have been grappling with this problem for some time now.
