How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to revive planting onions so that I can sell to educate my children after I sold all I had to pay fees. In addition, I also plan to add another startup of buying eggs and selling which can settle other family bills.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by improving not only my poor living standards but also for everyone in my village. In addition, the lessons that we received from the officers were great and we all adhered to them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a single mother of three, I had been struggling to settle school fees for my children. Upon receiving my second transfer, I planned to settle tuition fees for the entire term for all my kids in secondary school and one in technical college with Kshs.35,000.With Kshs 12,000 I used to pay for my outstanding arrears for National Insurance Fund(NHIF) card for the previous year and also paid for the entire year since with my health condition, I visit the hospital regularly. This will lessen the burden of paying a lot of money in cash. I saved the remaining amount for emergency purposes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was overwhelmed with joy after realizing that I had received my transfer from GiveDirectly. As a widow, I had to shoulder all the responsibilities in my household and I had not been able to achieve some of my goals like fencing of my land due to insufficient funds. Receiving this money gave me an opportunity to achieve this and other goals that I had.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Good health is everyone's wish and this has always been my prayer as I am a widow and the only hope to my children. I have a terminal disease and I regularly visit the hospital for medication. Paying for the drugs on cash is expensive and as a way of evading this, I had acquired a National Hospital Insurance Fund so that I can be using it during my checkups. Sometimes, getting money to pay for the monthly premiums is a challenge and I am glad that the transfer enabled me to pay upfront for the next one year. This to me is the biggest difference in my daily life as I am assured that I will be getting the needed care and drugs from the hospital without worrying about the money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am suffering from a terminal diseases and I frequently visit the hospital for checkups and to get drugs and I have been using my National Hospital Insurance Fund(NHIF) card to pay for this. I sometimes do not have money to use in paying for the monthly premiums and I end up skipping my checkups. As a way of solving this, I decided to use KES 6000 from my transfer to pay upfront for the next one year. Also, I spent to KES 20000 to purchase some poles, nails and barbed wired to use in fencing a piece of land that my spouse had purchased 26 years ago. I settled on this since I have been planting some crops on this land and end up harvesting nothing as other people's livestock usually feed on them and I am unable to control them as I live a bit far from this land. In addition to this, I spent KES 5000 to purchase some books that were needed in school for my daughter who was joining high school this year and also paid for her remedial fee. I spent the remaining KES 9000 on food and other household necessities after saving KES 6000 for emergency purposes.
