How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal that I did not have before which is to buy a piece of land. The initial one is not only small but also unproductive. I rarely get plenty and quality harvests and this has been affecting my family generally. Therefore I believe having the piece of land will help us eradicate the prolonged famine that we have been through.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I do not see any sector in that GiveDirectly has not done well. Every needy household received the cash timely without any discrimination. Also, I was asked to choose what to purchase according to my needs. This was the best part of all and I am grateful to GiveDirectly for finally fulfilling the desires of my heart.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying three oxen and four goats at a total of KES 45000. I settled for the oxen specifically for my agricultural activities because initially, I used to hire those of friends which were costly and sometimes forced to use my own hands. I could rarely get adequate harvests. It will now be a relief to me because apart from working on my farm, I will be hiring them for my friends at a fee and earning an income. Later on, I paid fees of KES 8000 for my son who is in secondary school. He has been on and off due to the arrears which affected his performance negatively. I believe that he will now study peacefully without any disturbance hence good results. With the remaining amount, I bought food for four families which took us almost four weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had taken my cows for grazing and while I was there, I got a message but I was unable to read it. So, I waited up until the time when I went back home. Luckily, my son was still around. I asked him to read the message for me and he informed me that the funds we were eagerly awaiting from give directly had been sent. We celebrated together as this meant solving most of our financial problems including school fee payment .
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
A while back, there were famines in my area that led to me losing 35 of my cows.  Normally I would sell them to get funds for both my children's school fees and my family's upkeep. Now that I only had 5cows left, it became quite hard for me to meet most of my needs. But this changed ever since I started receiving funds from give directly. I have seen a great difference in my life in that, I have been able to work on the plan (house construction) I had halted due to insufficient finances. I also got to pay my children's school fee arrears and purchase 5 more goats to rear.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a livestock farmer, and the earnings I get from here are what I use to support my family's needs, especially, my children's school fees. Unfortunately, we had some famine and I lost 35 cows out of the 40 I had. This inconvenienced me and I had to halt my plans of building a house. But when I got the funds from give directly, I was able to buy some iron sheets and tree logs to facilitate the construction. Furthermore, my child, who is in form two, had school fee arrears of KES 8000 that I settled. I then added five more goats to the 16 I had to enhance my livestock farming business.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was working in a company that transport goods to Tanzania for over 10 years. But during that time everyone in this whole compound was depending on me. I could not even save for myself. Because of that, I could not be able to put up a structure for myself as a retirement home. Now many people including my neighbors are wondering why I still sleep in a one room mud walled house despite that I was working. It is for that reason that I want to construct a two room semi-permanent house. I plan to use 50000KES for this project and use the rest of the money to pay school fees for my two children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One of my children completed his primary school education and he was to join secondary school. I had looked all the possible places to find fees for him but it was almost in vain. It was until one of my sons talked to his boss where he work as a shopkeeper called and assured me that his boss will take my son to school and I should not be worried. A great relief came in my life and I could not hide my joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
During the time of working in Vanga as a loader, I used to buy goats and cows. I use to take that as my retirement investment little did I know that there is going to be drought in the village. All my cows and goats died and now I have nothing to depend on. Am very weak now, I can not do strenuous duties. I still have two children in secondary school and one in primary school. The little I get now from charcoal burning can not sustain us all. It's very painful and in most occasion I find myself in depression.
