How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years and beyond, my primary goal is to persist in expanding my cow herd. I foresee a promising future in this endeavor. Beyond aiding us in meeting educational expenses, it will also serve as a source of income during our later years, allowing my spouse and me to retire from the demanding task of charcoal burning. This shift towards cattle rearing carries the potential for greater financial security and a more comfortable retirement.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has has done commendable job by giving us unconditional cash transfer. This has brought about a remarkable transformation in our lives. The unrestricted nature of the cash empowered us to use the funds in ways that best suited our individual needs. However, I do wish that the organization could reconsider providing the support to us again, given our ongoing financial commitments. With seven children yet to complete their studies, I continue to face considerable expenses that can impact their education.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the recent transfer, I immediately allocated $230 to cover the high school fees for our three children. Additionally, I used $30 to clear fee arrears for one child who completed secondary education two years ago but couldn't proceed to tertiary studies due to financial constraints as his KSCE certificate was withheld by school due to the fee arrears he had. The transfer was a great relief because normally, accumulating such a substantial amount is incredibly challenging given that my charcoal-burning business only provides $10 weekly—insufficient to cover both education and sustenance. I'm now a contented parent, free from the burden of fee arrears, allowing my children to focus on their studies without fear of interruptions.
To further our prospects, I invested $160 in purchasing a cow, initiating a livestock rearing venture. I'm optimistic that the cow will reproduce, yielding not only domestic milk but also future income through sales. I spent the remaining money to buy essential food for our family of nine.

In the upcoming year and beyond, my objective is to acquire a cow that will help me cover the school fees for my children. To accomplish this, I plan to utilize my third transfer to purchase the cow. I am incredibly thankful for the support that has allowed us to experience a life-changing transformation, and I eagerly anticipate the journey ahead on this positive path.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a charcoal vendor, I am married and blessed with seven children. Upon receiving my transfer, I immediately decided to spend $300 towards paying the high school fees for our children. In the past, gathering such a substantial amount of money at once had been incredibly challenging due to the hardships we face in our area. With the remaining funds, I wisely purchased essential food items for our family. The joy that fills my wife and me is immeasurable knowing that we were able to swiftly settle our children's school fees. The support we received granted us a sense of financial freedom that I will forever cherish.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the notification of the first transfer the previous evening, but it wasn't until around 7:00 a.m. on the second day that I saw the message. I had been receiving several random messages from the service provider, and I didn't pay much attention to the notification at first. My spouse was with me at home when I saw it, and on sharing the news, we were both thrilled. We had many plans for our family, including our children's education and other household necessities.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since receiving the recent transfer, the biggest difference in my daily life has been the availability of plenty of food in my household. This has had a tremendous impact not only on our physical health but also on our overall wellbeing. In addition, being able to pay all my children's school fees on time for the first time has been a huge relief, and has given us all a sense of accomplishment and pride. With these two things in place, I feel more motivated to work on other activities that will continue to transform our family. I am hopeful that with subsequent transfers, I will be able to ensure the sustainable availability of foodstuffs and make further improvements in our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When the second transfer from GiveDirectly came through, I felt relieved and excited at the same time. As a father of seven, providing for the family has never been easy, especially since we depend on charcoal production and a tree seedling nursery bed, which have been affected by unpredictable weather patterns. With the transfer, I decided to prioritize my children's education by paying for their school fees of $105, buying them new school uniforms for $15, and also spending $70 to ensure they had enough food to sustain them. I bought a sack of maize, millet, and 5 kg of beans, which would last us a while. I used the remaining money for transportation costs, as I took my children to school on the reporting day. It was such a huge relief to be able to cater to all these expenses without worrying about the limited income from our small errands. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the support, which has greatly impacted our lives.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a great plan for the transfers. First I will purchase food, a bag of maize at $60 dollars and some commodities such as sugar, cooking oil. In addition to this, I will also use the transfers to pay for my children's school fees. This will assist me alot since my children get sent home occasionally since I can't afford to pay for all their tuition fees. I also plan to purchase goats which I will sale whenever I'm faced with money challenges.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiness comes from my family, especially wellbeing. This is the aspect that always delights me since there is nothing like seeing my family healthy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge I'm facing at the moment is the lack of money. I depend on menial work which is not enough to cater to my family. This has led to a lack of food for my family and we go without food sometimes. I lack school fees also for my children and this has forced one of my daughters, Mercy to finish school without getting her certificate since we could not afford it. Additionally, the lack of money has forced me to sell almost all my livestock which makes my future uncertain because it's all I depend on.
