Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 am when my son came to inform me that GiveDirectly has sent the money. I was just relaxing at home. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money. I knew we would be able to attend eye medical examination at Kisii hospital. My son withdraw the money the same day and we plan on how to handle it. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to live a better life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is being in a position to attend medical examination and treatment from a specialist. My spouse too needed eye treatment. Due to old age we had experience eyes problems. We had always wanted to see a doctor but there was no money. We depend mostly on our children to support us. We are very old and we no longer engage in an income generating activity. When we received the transfer from GiveDirectly we felt so happy because we knew we would be able to attend some aye examination. Currently we are doing well and happy. Our eyes are good and we can see well compared to when we had not seen the doctor. GiveDirectly has improved our living standards and enabled us get the best medication. I would have sold some of my asset to sort out the expenses.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 38,000 on eye medical examination at Kisii hospital. We were attended to by a specialist. We had always wished to do this but there was no money. My spouse felt so happy because this was our opportunity to get the medical attention. Currently we are able to see well unlike before. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items. We are so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My wife and I are very old, we have a good house but getting access to nutritional food at the moment is quite a challenge. We depend on our children who also have their own families to provide for us. Receiving this money will enable us to be independent and have access to adequate nutritional food. We shall buy a dairy cow worth KES 40000. This will provide us with enough milk for consumption and hence better health for both of us. With the remaining amount, we will use it to stock food for future use and also for medications.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The love and the care we have received from our lovely children at our old age has brought joy into our lives. Our children ensure that we have food on the table and whenever we are sick they also take us to the hospital.Their unity and affection for us have brought happiness in our lives for the past 6 months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our health condition is the biggest challenge we are currently facing. Both of us have old age diseases that have paralyzed our muscles, although my wife does not sit in a wheelchair she can barely walk not work because of joint pains. As a result we have sold out all our livestock to pay for our medications and also to acquire my wheel chair. Our children are also in financial crisis because of our health conditions. Both of us do not engage in any activity at the moment because our age and health do not allow us to do so.
