How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Looking ahead, my goal for this year is to establish my own shop. Currently operating from home, I aspire to have a separate space for my business. With savings and upcoming transfers, I aim to achieve this goal. A dedicated space will enhance my business, allowing me to expand my stock and increase profits. These profits will contribute to saving for my children's education. I am deeply thankful for the support provided by this organization,it has been a big blessing for my family and I am excited about the positive changes ahead.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband takes care of livestock on behalf of others while I run a small business selling sardines and small pastries to support our family of nine. Life hasn't always been easy; we often struggled to put food on the table, waiting for my husband to get paid so that we could have something to eat. Paying school fees was also a challenge, and my children were frequently sent home from school. I am truly grateful that our situation has improved since we started receiving these transfers. Now, I can provide food for my family, buy clothes for my children, and comfortably pay their school fees. I have also been able to save some of the money we have received. Recently, I saved $40 in our savings club. This is money that I intend to use later on to build a shop. I then used $20 to pay school fees, ensuring that my children continued with their learning. Another $34 was spent to buy food for Christmas, and I am happy to say that my family enjoyed the holidays. The remaining amount was used to purchase soap and other household essentials that had run out and were needed. Receiving these transfers fills me with immense joy, and I am grateful for the opportunity they've provided to transform our lives.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to open a food stand in the nearest trading center. I've always aspired to start my food stand, but financial constraints have hindered me from doing so. Since I started receiving the cash transfers, I've been saving $10 through a self-help club. At the end of the year, I anticipate receiving a lump sum of cash from the club, which will enable me to establish the food stand. This represents a significant improvement from my current business of selling donuts. With the income from the new business, I hope to generate better profits to assist my husband in providing for the needs of our seven children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is the primary provider, working as a herd man, but his income is insufficient to cover all the basic needs of our seven children. I'm delighted that the cash transfers have enabled me to actively contribute to the household needs, including covering school fees and buying food. This has not only eased the hardships in our household but has also lightened the financial burden on my husband. I allocated $30 from the recent cash transfer to purchase a goat, with the belief that raising goats will generate enough wealth to support my children's future school fees even after the cash transfers come to an end. I also directed $20 towards covering the school fees of my two children. There was an outstanding debt at school for that month, and I didn't want them to miss out on their education. Furthermore, I saved $20 through a savings group, and my goal is to establish a food stand at the nearest trading center. Currently, I make and sell donuts, and I intend to expand the business to increase profits. The remaining $32 was used to purchase food to ensure that my seven children, husband, and I had at least one meal per day, as there were days when we went to bed hungry due to a lack of money for food.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am determined to achieve financial stability despite being unemployed. Recognizing an untapped market, I plan to start a business selling boiled beans. Through careful saving, I aim to acquire the necessary equipment and provide a convenient and affordable meal option. With strategic planning and a commitment to quality, I am confident in the success of my venture and the path towards financial independence.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a devoted mother of seven, my priority is the happiness and well-being of my children. Upon receiving my transfers, I immediately allocated $10 for their school fees, ensuring their education continues uninterrupted. Additionally, I set aside $10 for my monthly merry go round contribution, reinforcing community bonds and providing a safety net. With the remaining $14, I purchased food to nourish my family, fostering a loving and supportive environment. Through responsible financial management, I strive to create a bright and secure future for my children.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a lot of goals for this year, but my top priority is to save enough money to launch a business. It would be wise to start another profitable business since I don't make enough money from selling charcoal to support my family. In this regard, I want to launch a small kiosk business selling fruits, vegetables, and fish that are fresh. I'll eventually turn the company into a fast-food restaurant and make a fortune.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Both my husband and I work odd casual jobs such as making and selling charcoal in order to make ends meet. Our family has experienced extreme hardship over the last three months as a result of significant financial difficulties. Due to the small number of buyers, selling the charcoal yields very little profit. In addition to paying very little, it is extremely tiresome and laborious and has detrimental effects on our health. I therefore spent a sizable portion of $14 from my February transfers on food for the family. We had to survive on one meal per day as the situation grew worse. I'm happy to report that since receiving the money, we now eat two meals a day. In similarly, I funded my four children's primary school education by paying their tuition in an effort to keep them in class and prevent them from being frequently dismissed, which would have distracted them from their studies. Finally, I put the last $10 into a savings group because I'd like to open a fast food restaurant someday.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am married with four children. My husband works as a charcoal burner, which is the source of our daily income. Life as a charcoal burner can be a struggle because charcoal is not a necessity, as many people prefer to use firewood. The biggest challenge is ensuring that the family has a meal and the children are at school. After being enrolled in the support program, I distributed the money equally to my immediate needs, which are school fees and food for the family. Recently, I changed the cycle of expenditure and now I saved $10 and equally spent the rest on food and school fees.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Actually three days before receiving the funds, two of my kids had actually been kicked out school due to the fact that I had failed to settle their tuition debt. That is why as soon as I realised the donation had come through, I took away KES 1,500 and ensured I paid some part of the tuition debt. I also used KES 1,000 from the transfers I had got and used it to purchase four packets of maize flour because there was no food in the house. Lastly I used the balance of KES 500 and left it in my savings account because I was hoping later on when I had saved enough help renovate my house since it was almost collapsing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had received my first transfer at around 9am when I was just in the house. In the course of that week, I was in great need of finances since my children were just at home because I had not paid their remedial fee. Upon realization of the transf1er I felt so nice and very happy. However, in order to build my confidence that it was real the transfer had been sent to me, I consulted my helper who equally confirmed that I had received the right amount. I could not hesitate but to rather go and withdraw it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since I began receiving my transfer, the biggest difference in my life is clearing school fee arrears for my children in time. Since I paid their fee, they have been studying so comfortably without being sent back home. As a result, I have begun noticing some improvement in their academics. In the previous terms, they could spend quite a long time home being frequently had difficulties in paying their remedial fee. This greatly undermined their studies. I am so glad that in the next 5 years, my children will always be able to be in school no or minimal disruption.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my first transfer to pay school fee for my two children. They had been sent back home for fee arrests equivalent to KES 400 at a time when I was down financially. Paying their school fee in time has really relieved me from the pressure of having them just at hime. I spent the rest KES 700 to buy food stuffs for my household. As a result, the past one month has been a better month since I not only cleared paying school fees but also had some food in the house. Therefore, the additional income I could get to a great extent supported my family. I did not struggle like I used to during 2021.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My family and I are currently living in a miserable grass-thatched one-bedroom house missing a door. Moreover, one of the walls collapsed a few months ago and I have been unable to renovated the house up to now. I am planning to use 50,000KES to construct a new three-bedroom semi-permanent house for my family of eight. The three rooms will be enough for all of us and any visitor who might visit will not miss a place to sleep. I will use a further 30,000KES to buy two wooden beds and two mattresses. We have been sleeping on the floor for over 5 years now. It has proven unhealthy because as a family, we constantly experience chest pains. Getting the new beds and mattresses will assure us of nice and comfortable sleep.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Eating sounds normal for any human being. With all the struggles I always go through day by day so as to ensure my family has eaten something, I always feel happy whenever I share a meal with my husband and children at night. This gives me hope that tomorrow will be better.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The drought in my area has made it impossible to harvest anything in our farm for the third season now. This has rendered my family food insecure and putting a regular meal on the table has been difficult. In a week, we can go for three days without food.
