How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I ever come into some money, my top priority would be to purchase a piece of land. Right now, I'm living on family property, but the dream of owning my parcel of land is what drives me. It's not just about property; it represents something deeper for me; respect and dignity. Owning that piece of land would symbolize my independence and the hard work I've put in to secure my future. It's a simple goal, but it means the world to me, a place I can call my own, a piece of the Earth that echoes my journey towards self-sufficiency and pride.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has, in my opinion, kept its commitment to delivering transfers as promised and within the timeframes specified. I received all of the transfers as promised, and the impact can be seen in my neighborhood. I am glad to report that the transfers have enabled me to increase the size of my animal herd. These planned actions are laying opportunities for my family's future financial security.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the second cash transfer was a breakthrough in my life. With $250 of the money, I invest in five high-breed goats. The goats served as investment and security for my family as they would provide us with income as they multiplied over time. It was a small but important step towards financial stability. Since it was a farming season, I used $75 to buy quality agricultural inputs, ensuring a bountiful harvest. Watching my crops thrive brought immense joy. The transformation didn't stop there, my son was struggling to complete the roof of his house. With $100, I was able to assist him in finishing that project. Seeing him move into a safe and comfortable house filled me with pride and relief. The remaining amount, I decided to save for our family's daily needs and emergencies. Thanks to GiveDirectly, I had not only secured our present but also laid a foundation for a more promising future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While resting at home at around 1 pm due to the scorching sunshine, I heard a message tone from my phone. I slowly took it from the table to see what kind of message I had received. I was surprised after the confirmation that I had received $550 in my account. I felt very happy and thankful for the money. How I wished I could see the sender face to face so that I could appreciate it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that my parent used to be rained on while in the house during the rainy season. This is because the roof of his house was in poor condition. Currently, he dwells in a comfortable house no matter the amount of rainfall that pours on the roof. This is after the renovation using the first transfer amount. This has brought happiness to the family because seeing him uncomfortable was the worst experience I wanted to witness.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon getting the transfer, I opted to renovate both my father's house and my elder brother's house since I share the house with him. My father's house required 16 iron sheets while the other one required 7. Therefore, I bought 23 pieces of iron sheets costing $207 and the labor charge of the contractor was $150. For the roofing nails and the roofing timbers, it cost $83. I am happy to report that, the houses are now in good condition and they no longer leak as before. My parents are sleeping well and comfortably nowadays unlike before the transfer. After that, I used the remaining amount to buy some food for the family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am living with my parents making a family of three. The parents are living in a one-room house with a leaking room and a lack of bedding. They use sacks as their bedding. I am a casual worker making $24 per month which only caters to food. My parents are aged and they do not have any work. They rely on me for their survival. I did my KCSE two years ago and my results are still at school due to fee balances of $150. I will use $500 to renovate the parent's house and buy a bed and mattress. This will improve their living standard and also restore their respect in the community. I will also use $150 to go clear the balance of the fee at Dungicha secondary and get my certificate. I desire is to join the military and enable my family to have food every day. Thanks to Give Directly organization for their program.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have three younger brother brothers who stay and works at Mombasa. They had last come home three years ago. On December festivals they all came home. We had a nice interaction with them and enjoyed meals together. The family union brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I did my KCSE two years ago and my results are still at school due to a lack of school fees. Both my parents are jobless at home. I do casual jobs of making charcoal for sale. I make $24 per month from the charcoal-making job which caters to food only. Lack of job is the challenge I am currently facing.
