How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This will be my additional source of income. I am planning on saving some money from the sales of my farm produce and milk from my dairy cow. I wish to venture into the business of selling cereals. This will be my additional source of income to the family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The training and the enrollment were perfectly done. We understood all processes and what was required of us during the registration stage. The majority of the people spent the transfer on different income-generating activities since the money was unconditional. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always wished to own a dairy cow but this was not possible because I did not have a steady source of income. I rely on small-scale farming to earn an income. I plant vegetables, maize and beans. These are mainly for consumption, sometimes I sell the surplus produce to earn an income to buy milk and other household items. I spent $400 on purchasing a dairy cow, I am so grateful because I no longer buy milk like before. I used to spend $5 per week on milk alone. Currently, my children get enough milk and I sell the surplus to earn some income. I have devoted much of my time to this daily keeping project and I wish to expand this in the coming years. The remaining amount of money was spent on food, clothes and basic household items that we were missing at that time. GiveDirectly has changed my living standard to be much better than before and we are so grateful for this.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I got to see the message at around 7:00 pm when I was coming back from a nearby centre where I normally work from. Earlier in the day I had heard some of my neighbours whom we were enrolled with say that they had received their transfers. I stayed calm as I waited for my transfer to be sent to my phone and when it finally came, it did not come as a surprise to me. I later shared the good news with some of my close family members who celebrated with me. I later withdrew the money and we used the money in the ways we had planned to use.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the investments that I made. The dairy cow that I bought is a game changer in my family since it will not only provide us with milk for consumption but will also provide us with enough to sell and meet other family expenses. I feel the future of my children is more secured than it has ever been before. I am a mother of five and I largely depend on agriculture to make ends meet.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 48000 to buy a dairy cow and used the remaining amount to buy clothes and food for family. The decision to buy a dairy cow was because we did not own one having lost the one that we initially owned. The cost of buying milk was becoming unbearable to us considering the cost of living had already gone up with the prevailing tough economic times. Having bought the dairy cow, we now have enough milk supply where we can even sell the surplus to earn little income and be able to meet other local expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Imagine living in a single grass-thatched house with a family of seven. This is a miserable life, we do not have enough privacy, and this worries me a lot now that my children are growing up. The situation puts me between a rock and a hard place. I keep on thinking of building a spacious house for my family, this money is my savior now that I will set aside KES 50,000 to construct a new home for us. With the proximity to the Chebalungu forest, I will invest KES 40,000 to buy cattle and rear them to enable me to earn more income in the future. The forest provides free and adequate pasture for battles.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have been having peace and good health in the last six months. This made me feel happy. I felt energized and able to work hard to put food on the table for my family of seven.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest challenge is providing food and other family basic needs. This comes in handy now that the cost high cost of living is high. From my casual job, I earn about KES 300 per day which is peanuts compared to my family's expenses. This is giving a lot of pressure now that I am the sole breadwinner for the family.
