How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that these transfers have enabled me to fulfill some of my greatest needs, that if I was to fulfill them at my own cost, then it would have taken me years to accomplish them. Firstly, I was living in a small house with no hopes of upgrading to a better house. However, I am now comfortably in my new spacious and iron roofed house, having managed to purchase adequate building materials through this money. Secondly, I acquired a new sewing machine to help me work effectively in my tailoring shop. This has helped me to serve many customers and also earn an extra income. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me to achieve all these.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in empowering us financially to improve and uplift our lowly lives. Our lives have never been the same ever since receiving this money. We have been able to accomplish many things that to us seemed impossible considering the hardships that we are facing. We have constructed new decent houses, taking our children to school, owning livestock and also providing for our families without much struggle. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well in our region.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I had began the construction of my new house using the first transfer. However, I couldn't complete the construction because the materials got exhausted in the process. When I received the second transfer, I purchased the remaining building materials and completed my house. I also had desired to have a sewing machine because I am a trained tailor and my dream was to start my own tailoring shop. Thus on receiving this transfer, I bought the sewing machine which I am using at KES 10000. Lastly, I paid for my children's school fees at KES 7000 and spent the remaining amount to cater for the daily expenses and fulfilling other household basic needs such foodstuffs and other necessities.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My biggest difference in life is that I will be able to have a new house soon that I will be able to shelter my family from cold, rain and strange animals. Due to a lack of a stable source of income, I have been unable to provide food on the table for my family sometimes or even repair my house. I have been doing casual works in the village and sometimes are hard to come by, unlike in town where you can easily get a job. I lived in fear of attack from strange animals and diseases because of rains and cold weather at night or even the house to crumble while we are inside. With the second transfer, if I will get I will use it open a business of my own that I will use it to provide food for my family upkeep.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received this money, I was in the house at around 11: 30 am preparing food for my children. I heard a message from my phone and I asked my son to check what the message was all about. He read the message that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. We jumped up and down because of the joy we had in our heart. I thanked God because he had answered my prayers through GiveDirectly. I knew that the amount I received will be able to transform my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
My first transfer I want to spent in constructing a new house. Currently, I live in a mud house that has crumbled at the back due to the rains. I have been patching up with old iron sheets to protect us from cold and strange animals. I bought iron sheets and timber and the rest I want to use it for labour. I will be delighted when I complete constructing and moving inside my house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a fresh start in my life. With limited employment opportunities in Kenya, I would wish to venture into self employment. As a skilled tailor, I will use my first transfers in purchasing a sewing machine together with the required fabric. This will earn me a sustainable income. Secondly, I'll get two diary cows for my family. That way, I'll be able to have constant supply of milk while at the same time be able save money which I've been spending in milk purchase. Having all these projects running means a stable family, a healthy family as well as educated children. I want my children to be proud of me some day.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day normally starts at five o'clock in the morning. Immediately after preparing breakfast and seeing my kids off for school, I head straight to the shamba for my usual tillage. This goes up until five in the evening with a lunch break around noon. Evening is always my favorite part of the day. I feel happy to see my children back from school in good health. At this time also, I take my time to assist with their homework and their desire for education inpires me a lot.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Ever since my husband lost his job last year but one, my biggest hardship has as always been lack of stable income. We solemnly depended on him back then, and it has taken the grace of God to survive this far. My daughter, Dama, who is sitting for her final exams in secondary has been my source of inspiration. Despite having fees arrears for the whole year, she is still topping in her class. It will shatter my life if I fail to educate her beyond this level. How I thank heavens for the help I'm about to receive from GD.
