How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I had never received the transfer. Through this transfer, I was able to construct a decent shelter for my family and we are now residing in a comfortable house. Back in the day, I was living in a house that was leaking and it serves us as a kitchen at the same time. In addition, I was able to acquire another piece of land for farming which I am able to cultivating. I will be able to get more harvest from the farm something that will solve the food insecurity in my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did extremely well for sending us cash transfer direct to our phones. This has reduced avenue for fraud. I am very grateful for the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $300 my second transfer to purchase a piece of land which I plan to use it for farming. This is because I practice shift farming and the place where I had been cultivating for some years is no longer fertile to support the crops. My desire has been to acquire a new portion of land but I lacked the finances to fulfill my wish. I also bought school uniforms for my 4 children who are in primary since the one they had were worn out. Furthermore, I purchased clothes for myself and enough food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 9 AM when I was preparing breakfast for my children, then my phone started ringing continuously. Since I am illetrate ki asked my daughter in law to confirm it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy since I knew i would construct a spacious decent house that I have been longing for a long time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having my own house brings the biggest difference in my daily life. Before the coming of GiveDirectly in my village, I used to sleep in my relative's houses since mine was in poor condition and I was afraid someday it might collapse when I am inside. My life was so miserable and no peace at all. My children could sleep at their friend's house which was very small it could not accommodate them all. They could get some enough space to do their evening assignments and thus was really affecting their academic performance at school. I am now happy and hopeful because all is sorted now. My children can now do their homework without any interference and we now living happily as a family under one roof.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials which include several building poles, iron sheets, nails and timber. This was purely for the constriction of a new house since the previous one was in a poor state and very small it could not accommodate some of my family members. I later cleared some school fees arrears for my children since they had huge balances, With the reming amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs and some decent clothes for my children. What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is old, small and in a bad condition. The roof is grass thatched and leaks during the rainy weather. I have for a long time admired an iron sheet roof. I will use 300 USD to build a two roomed house. I have also budgeted 150 USD to buy 5 goats. The goats will help me pay school fees in a few months time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Waking up healthy and strong to do the day's activities is what makes me happy. This is because when I work I am assured of getting food to eat. Morning is therefore the happiest part of my day. I am a farmer and farming requires enough energy to work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been having health problems for the last 10 years which have made me weak. I depend on farming which needs a lot of energy and therefore my weak body has disadvantaged me. The little output has led to less income. This is what has been my biggest hardship.
