How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Increasing our land is on the top of my list of goals. With the number of kids we have, it's critical that we amass enough material things to share equally in terms of inheritance. The other thing is ,in the short term, is to start making and selling charcoal. As a second source of income, I feel this could work well. Finally, to grow more food, and sell, thus making money and giving my kids a life me and their father could only have dreamt of, when we were their age
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly allows recipients to conquer their circumstances and come out as victors instead of victims of situations. Financial independence is not to be taken for granted and GiveDirectly have mastered the art of giving that to recipients, while still allowing them to maintain their dignity , through planning for their own money and allocating it as they see fit. May they never cease with their work and continue to grow and be blessed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Owning my own little bit of Kenya has always been a desire of mine. GiveDirectly transfers allowed me to fulfill my dream. I was able to locate and secure a nice tract of land, thanks to the funds from GiveDirectly. My husband sells livestock at Bamba Market. Cows, goats and sheep are his speciality. Needless to say, we would have taken centuries before we had saved up enough to buy land on our own. GiveDirectly bridged that gap in spectacular fashion. The remainder mainly went to paying fee for my 4 kids who are in school. I have one in Grade 5, 4, 3 and 2, while my eldest just finished class 8, and my youngest is only 3 and yet to start school next year. The two eldest are in Mamba Primary, where I pay KES. 500 , while the other two are in Miungu wa Mawe Primary School , where I pay KES. 250, each. With the funds, I also went ahead to pay the farm hand who assists on our farm. We grow maize , cassava and the likes, mainly for our use for for sale also if there's surplus. GiveDirectly truly came in when we needed them to and helped us achieve our goals.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home cleaning my compound. I vividly remember it was around 7 am when I received the message alert on my phone indicating that I had received the transfer. I was with my daughter at home since my husband was out for work. Being uneducated I gave my phone to my daughter who confirmed the message and truly I had received the transfer on my account. I was very happy for receiving the transfer since I had loss hope because all the villagers with whom we were enrolled together had received all their transfers. This is because I had an issue with the account number.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to accomplish my desire of owning oxen and ox plow that will assist me in ploughing my farm is the biggest difference in my life. I am confident that I will have sufficient farm produce from my firm leading hence ensuring that I have sufficient food for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to own oxen and ox plow which will assist me in preparing my farm to improve my crop farming. With this, I will be able to cultivate a larger section of my farm on time leading to more harvest. Previously, I was preparing it using hoe which was slow and with a poor harvest. I spent my transfer to purchase 3 oxen for KES 45,000. I am planning to sell one when it grows up to educate my kids and the remaining 2 to assist me in plowing. The remaining amount assisted me to purchase food for the family since we are still experiencing drought in our area.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have six children who are all in various primary schools. They all need school fees every term and it has been a big challenge, in all schools they are, they all have school fee arrears. Receiving this money means clearing all the arrears as well as buying them new uniforms, shoes and long-lasting school bags.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My firstborn who is in class seven performed well in his exams. Being a firstborn he is setting a good example to the other children and this made me proud and happy with him.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
With the prolonged drought in our area, I could not harvest anything. The maize I had in my granary, I ate them all. I even ate my maize seeds because of a lack of food. My biggest challenge is food. I have to buy food nowadays and buying food need money. Being jobless, I fully depend on my husband in everything.
