How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal of clearing all school debts for my children. Because of the low income from my husband, who is a carpenter, we have been able to pay for the school fees. The school fees arrear have accumulated and force the school administration to send our children home until such a time when we will clear them. My goal is to pay off the arrears to enable my children to go back to school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly staff were very professional, and they offered wonderful services to us with no harassment or prejudice. For this I would like to commend the entire organization for that. In the improvement areas, I would suggest that organization puts emphasis on timely sending of the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my transfer in buying iron sheets. Poles and sisal twines used in building a new house for the family (husband and 9 children). Sleeping in one room with my big boys has been a challenge and as such, it forced them to seek accommodation from their friends. With the completion of building the house, it will help bring back my children and strengthen our bond with them as a family. Besides planning on building the house, I paid school fees for my children who are in secondary school and other in primary school. I paid the school fees because they were not in school due to school fee arrears. This was a major setback to them, as they lost much in their studies. I am happy that they could go back and continue with their education.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 in the evening when I preparing supper when I heard a very loud vibration from my mobile phone. Since I am illiterate I asked one of my sons to confirm for me the contents of the messages. After going through them he realized that it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. I just wished you could see how I reacted because to me it was like a dream. I couldn't contain my happiness and I remember saying a special prayer in regards to this precious gift.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now healthier and happier. Previously, skipping meals used to be the trend in my household. This is because I was the family breadwinner who depended on temporary jobs. Having a family of seven was never easy because my spouse has been ailing for years with no improvements. Therefore for the past three years, I had to pick up all the family's responsibilities. The little I could earn was barely enough to cater to all the needs and as a result, we had to take a single meal a day or go without. My children were malnutrition and my spouse's health was deteriorating day by day. After receiving the cash transfers, I had to prioritize the issue of food security. I am so glad that we have enough food that would last us for a couple of days. My children are now healthy and glowing white has been my wish. Also, my spouse is now quite good not like how he used to be courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a portion of my first transfer on clearing school fees for my two children who are both in nearby secondary schools. They have been sent regularly due to the accumulated arrears. This has been frustrating me for a while but I was positive that they will all achieve their dreams. In addition to that, I cleared the debt of KES 15000 to my friends who had helped me earlier in sorting my bills. I did not have peace of mind since they could always inquire about their cash. In addition, I bought some building poles at KES 5000 to build a new house since my previous one is in poor condition. With the remaining, cash I am using it to buy foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a spacious house for my family of 12. This has been my longing but due to financial constraints, this dream has never come to pass. My elder brother died 5 years together with his 2 wives and he left me with his 6 children. This was so emotional because then the children were very young and I had to adopt them. My house is very small and it is not enough to accommodate all of us. This has forced my elder daughters to seek shelter from neighbors something that I feel is shameful. I am planning to spend all the transfers to build a big house so that we can live comfortably. This will make me proud as a parent because I will be filling my responsibilities.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My firstborn completed her secondary school in 2019 but due to financial instability. I have not managed to take her to college. In August, she was employed as an agent in town. This brought a lot of joy to me. The fact that she is occupied and at least she can support us with a few basic needs as I prepare to take her to college.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a good source of income is the biggest hardship I am currently facing. I work as a casual laborer in town. In a day I make at least 500 KES but it is not guaranteed. The wages are not enough to sustain all our basic needs such as shelter and school fees. This is the main reason which has contributed to my children seeking shelter from neighbors.
