How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My next goal is for me to be able to purchase a parcel of land in future. I don't have any plans yet on how I would be able to raise the funds to do so but I am hopeful that with hard work and determination God will open away.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done exemplary Work in ensuring equity and transparency in their line of duty. Both the young and the elderly were empowered equally thus we are forever grateful. Throughout my interaction with the GiveDirectly staff, I have not seen anything that was not done correctly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a farmer and a mother of three, currently engaged in consistent farming. Upon receiving my transfer I used it in purchasing a dairy cow. This is because I am hopeful that I would be able to earn an income from it by selling milk. Secondly, I opted to pay school fees for my children so that they would comfortably study in school Lastly, I bought foodstuffs and clothes. I am grateful to have achieved so much in a short period unlike before when things were rough due to financial constraints.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It 9am. I was at the farm. I had left my phone at home. When I came back home I got a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately informed my family members. Everyone really celebrated with joy. It was the best day for us. I have never received such amount of money before. I stayed for two days and went to withdrew the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Buying a heifer is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I always buy milk from my neighbors and it's so costly because I do not have a source of income. I depend on small scale horticute farming. This earns me a small income to meet household basic needs. I had no extra money to buy a dairy cow. When I received the transfer I felt so happy. I was able to buy a heifer. This has given me hope since I will get enough milk when it reproduce. I will be able to sell the surplus milk at the shopping center to earn an income to meet other household items. I like dairy farming and I wish to improve this breed and ensure that I save some money to purchased another cow. GiveDirectly has enabled us to fulfilled our dreams and make life simple and easy for us.

I spent KES 30,000 to purchase a heifer. This was one of my goals. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I didn't had the money. I spent some amount on sofa set seats. Currently I have the best seats wish I didn't had before. The rest of the money I spend on clothes and food. I am so grateful for the support it has changed my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to increase the size of my arable land. I live in an acre piece of land together with my husband and four children. The housing structures have taken a bigger percentage of the land leaving just a quarter of an acre to farm. The produce I get from this farm can only sustain us for a few months post-harvesting. I intend to increase the size of my farm by half an acre for KES 80000 to farm. The produce from this farm will ensure that the deficit is catered for and so there will be food security for my family. The remaining amount of the transfer will be for completing my house and furnishing it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
At the beginning of this year, I had hired a piece of land in a different county to grow fodder for my dairy cattle. The fodder grew very well and last month I got a bumper harvest which I have stored in my store. This has ensured food security for my cattle throughout the year.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a farmer planting maize, vegetables, and sweet potatoes. I rely on rainwater to sustain the growth of the aforementioned crops. Unfortunately for the past few seasons, rainfall has been unpredictable and unreliable. I have been forced to fetch water from nearby water pans to irrigate my crops. Sometimes the drought is so tough that the water pans dry up forcing me to fetch water from as far as 5km. This is a tedious exercise and has a long-term repercussion on my well-being.
