How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life as a result of the GD transfers is the motorcycle I bought as an investment. I will now be getting daily income from the motorcycle which I have now employed my son to use for taxi business. At least I am sure on a daily basis, I will be getting an income unlike before the transfer where I was not even sure of where our next meal would come from. This is because we used to rely on inconsistent casual work which I would even go for a whole week without any kind of job. Sometimes, I would work but the payments could delay and it was a real struggle. Nothing was working out well and is the reason I decided to invest in an income-generating activity so that I could not struggle as I used to. Through the motorcycle, I will also be saving part of my income to start another business so that I just don't rely on one income activity.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GD did well in giving cash to everyone in the village. Had it been a few people who were receiving the cash and other not, there would have been complaints. The selection was fair and I am satisfied with GD processes. I don't feel there is anything they could have done better.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my transfer on buying a motorcycle as a source of income since I did not have any source of income before the transfers. I thought of investing the transfers so that I will always have an income to sustain my needs and the best I could do is a business. Since I was not able to do another business, I bought the motorcycle which my son will be using to an income to support us in the family as we also save to invest in another form of business. I would not want to go back to borrowing and begging as it was the case before the transfers.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The transfer helped me to clear school fees for my children. They had a huge fee balance that had accumulated since last year. My expectation has always been to see my children learning without any interruptions and I was afraid they would have even dropped out of school because their school fees was too much and had lost hope of clearing it. However, when Give Directly came, my hope for my children continuing with their studies was revived. Were it not for the coming of GiveDirectly, I bet my children would still be at home waiting until I get the money. I am at peace because clearing fees will give me adequate time to prepare for the next payment. This has also given me a lot of peace of mind and I can now focus on doing other important things. To me, this achievement is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember waking up very early that day to attend to my chores when I heard a message notification on my phone. Being illiterate, I sent one of my children to called my helper. He came and gave him my phone straight away to help me read the message. When he revealed to me that I had received my first transfer, I was filled with joy. I knew that it was the beginning of impacting my life positively.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer to pay for my children's school fees, both in high school and primary schools respectively. For a very long time raising enough money to pay their fees on time was difficult since I have never had a stable source of income. Receiving the money to me was a relief because for the first time I was able to pay my children's fees on time. In addition to this, I also purchased some goats which I am currently keeping in my homestead. Dowry payment was also on my plan and so I decided to spend some amount on this plan which was a success. I finally used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been operating kiosk business in my house but in March 2019, I was diagnosed with heart problem something that made me to spend all my savings in seeking medical care. The business collapsed after 6 months of illness and I have wish to restart this business but it has been in vain due to lack of capital. Receiving this money means accomplishment of my desire in life as I am planning to invest $150 of my transfer in this business which will act as my reliable source of income. The remaining amount will assist me in repairing my house which is about to collapse.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day, Waking up health and refreshed for the day give me hope and joy in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband is jobless after being involved in an accident 2 years ago that broke his left rib. I was left with the role of raising my family of 5 alone. Being illiterate and unable to find a better job, I resort in a small kiosks shopkeeper which failed after the health problems that I faced in march this year. Casual labor is what I have been doing for a living. Considering the health problems I have, I am still forced to do weeding casual labor in order to meet the needs of the family. Hence, Lack of reliable source of income is my biggest hardship.
