How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
GiveDirectly came into our village and our lives just at the right time. This was the moment we really needed money in our family to sort other several important bills which were pending. To imagine if we had not received is really a devastating thought to us, our lives would have been hard since school fees payment to start with would have been the hardest of all. We used to fully depend on loans which still was too hard for us to service it and would always lead to our assets being auctioned. Thanks to GiveDirectly for coming in handy when we needed most.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a lot of good things in our village and in all the results we are seeing we can boldly say that the work was well done. Our great happiness is due to the fact that the transfers we received are non-refundable and they were just meant to improve our living standard. In all what we have done with the money, I can't say that there was something which was not well done, I would have said that some other villages never received but we have always been told that the enrollment is still on and we are always hopeful that everyone will finally receive.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Having completed the already started projects with the first transfer, the second one found us well set with great ideas that we had generated. We decided to spend the first part of it on the construction of a new house and all the remaining was directed to the payment of school fees for our three children. I am now a happy parent of a son who passed well his form four exams and is soon joining the other two in University. A reason enough to be grateful to GiveDirectly for the great support they accorded to my household.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk from my neighbors and it was so costly for me. I am a small scale farmer and I sometimes do casual jobs in the village to earn an income to meet the basic needs of the family. I could not save some money because of the recurring expenditure at home. I used to wake up early in the morning to look for casual jobs and come back home late. I had no time to bond with my children. Currently, I have bought a dairy cow and get enough milk for my family and I sell the rest to earn an income to meet other basic needs and also pay part of the school fees. I have spent most of my time at home and reduce the time doing casual. I am so much grateful because I have hope that I will be in a position to pay school fees for my children using the savings from the sales of milk. My children would not be sent home like before to collect the school fee.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment Ithe money I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I remember it was very early in the money when I was checking my house as usual. I was so happy when I found a message confirming that I have received a sum of 55000 KES. I immediately inform my family members and they were all happy. We planned on how to spend the money and the first priority was to buy a cow.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer on buying a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me, I also paid school fees for my children and the rest of the money I used it to buy food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My family lives in a very small house which is already old.The house is often crowded and cannot accomodate all of us and we have always wished that we could get money to build another one.Receiving this money means that our wish has been granted and with it we will build a better and bigger house. With the remainder we will buy a cow. This to us will be a constant reminder of the great help we received from GiveDirectly
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day starts with preparing breakfast for my family and thereafter milking and feeding the cows.By mid morning,am done with these and I proceed to the farm till late in the afternoon.Working in the farm gives me joy and fulfilment because it is through this that I feed, clothe and educate my family. The happiest part of my day is therefore in the afternoon while working in the farm
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is raising school fees for my children.I have two children in college and one in secondary school.Their fees has been a constant burden to us because both my spouse and I do not have jobs nor skills that we could apply in self employment. Our only source of income is farming which is mostly unreliable and fully depends on climatic conditions. These too are unpredictable. We have not been able to fully depend on our farm to pay the fees and have even have to fundraise a few times
