How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always been business minded but the problem is where and how to get money for capital. My main wish is to open a retail shop where I can sell items to residents of my village at cheaper prices. I hope to do this by March this year and I'll need a capital of $1500. I chose a shop because it is an indigenous business which is familiar to everyone hence market will be readily available. I plan to raise this capital from well wishers since I can not raise this amount by myself.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I appreciate Give Directly for doing everything correctly and with a lot of wisdom. You have been a blessing to our whole village, you have given us money to buy food hence eradicating hunger. Nowadays we are no longer worried about tomorrow' since we have stocked enough food in the house. The only thing I would request you to do better is; not to deduct the cost of phones from our second transfer. Just issue the phones to us for free.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was extremely happy to receive this send transfer because I knew that finally I would use it on several projects. Before, I used to live in a mud-floor house. It was very dusty and so uncomfortable too clean. It always felt so cold at night and I couldn't sleep comfortably. I spent $39 on 6 bags of cement and $6 on 7 wheelbarrows of sand. I then paid $37 for labour and the floor of my house was well cemented. My beddings were also in a sorry state, I had been sleeping on a traditional rope bed and a very old and dirty mattress that never gave me the comfort of sleep. So I took $45 and bought a mattress, then took $55 and bought a strong bed. Thanks to Give Directly, my nights are peaceful, comfortable and short. Actually, you should come and see how my whole house has transformed into a beautiful heaven. I also used $200 to pay college fees for my son who is pursuing an electrical engineering course. Before these transfers, I would do casual jobs and also depend on well wishers for his education. I hope that my son will be able to help me financially after he finishes his studies and get employment. Thank you so much for lifting this burden. I also spent $80 on re stocking my fish business which had collapsed earlier. Right now I'm happy and grateful because my business has picked up. I then spend $36 on small other things like food and farming. 3600 farming.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 pm. I had traveled to Kilifi town to attend a conference on people living with HIV/Aids. Being a religious leader, I had gone to be trained to obtain knowledge that I will train other people on matters concerning Aids. I received messages about the transfer when I was about to rest after a busy day of training. I felt extremely happy for receiving my transfer which was to change our life for the better. I decide to continue with the training until the end and returned home to join the other family members to plan on how to use the transfer. I had some pending projects that I had desired to accomplish.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am living a happy life after restarting my livestock rearing a reliable source of income for the family. Previously, I had no long-term investment which I would rely on me whenever I face any financial challenge. In addition, being able to support my child to further and resume his college education gives me a peaceful state of mind. I am very grateful for the transfer, I never imagined that I would achieve this development very soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a big part of my transfer to start livestock rearing. I had wished to restart my goat rearing which I had been performing sometimes back but all my livestock were stolen. I used KES 38,500 to purchase 10 goats, I am very happy that I was able to restart goats raising a reliable source of income for my family. This is a very profitable venture, I will be able to sell them whenever I face any financial emergency in the future. In addition, I used the remaining amount to support the education of my child who is in college taking an electrical engineering course. He had always been out of school due to lack of fees, this forced him to differ his studies to engage in casual activities to raise fees for his education. I am happy that he was able to resume his studies after clearing his fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Working as an ustadh, getting a monthly stipend of 8 000 KES has made my children lose basic education. All of my four children did not reach secondary school save for the last born. He finished his secondary education two years ago and got excellent results. He was supposed to enrol for university studies but this never happened. Without hope, he has been employed as a salesman in one of the bookshops in town with a plan of saving towards his fees. The GiveDirectly transfers are coming at a time when we highly need them. With 80 000 KES , I will see my boy get enrolled in one of the universities. The rest of the transfers will help in establishing a small business of selling dried fish.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The day I heard of the coming of GiveDirectly into my village marked the beginning of my happiness. I have had stories of people saying not all people get enrolled into the program. Having the first chance of undergoing census keeps me at hope of benefiting and fulfilling the desires I have had for years.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife died of hypertension four years ago. He left me with four children. Two were young by then but currently, they have grown and gone to town looking for jobs.Staying alone in the village makes life uninteresting. Teaching in madrasa takes almost four hours of my daytime. I spend the rest of the day either sleeping or reading the Quran.I have been longing to start a business so that I could get busy but in vain.
