How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment I don't have any new goals, this is because I want to concentrate on paying school fees for my grandchildren so that they can one time be financial independent, is because their mother died a long time ago hence I have been the one taking care of them. I am also grateful for the transfer that boosted me financially towards achieving the goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The unconditional transfer came as a real blessing in my life, my living standard was lifted amazingly, the staffs were sociable thus, treating us with respect and without discriminating against anyone, I am so thankful for the assistance that has a whole impacted our village positively . So far I have not witnessed anything bad either about the money or the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer, though I am no longer energetic due to old age, I live with my grandchildren who are orphans. When I received my transfer I used KES 25,000 in building a decent house for my family, which I had previously invested in building material with my transfer. The house that I was living in before was grass-thatched and old, unfortunately, I was unable to build a new one due to financial constraints, I then used KES7000 on school fees and finally, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. I am grateful for the support that lifted my living standards to a higher level in society.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the message that confirmed the receipt of my first transfer brought the greatest joy to me. I was with my children at home that morning who confirmed with me that it was indeed the money I had been expecting from GiveDirectly. Our priority was to start the construction that we had been planning at home but the school fees that were needed more urgently had to be paid first and buying some construction materials later that week.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving my first transfer is the complete payment of school fees for both my son and the grandson. It is a good feeling that they are now enjoying ample study time as they prepare for the examinations just like their classmates. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for this generous support, and I am looking forward to starting the construction work when I receive the second transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before receiving the first transfer, I had great hope of constructing a new house to replace the current one that is so small for my family of seven. I had made a list of all the requirements after consulting a local constructor who helped me in creating the list. It was unfortunate that just a week before the receipt of the transfer, I received two calls - one from the college where my son studies, and the other one from the secondary school where my grandchild whom I have been his guardian studies also. In both schools, arrears had piled up to a total of KES35000 that I had to pay after receiving this transfer to allow them to sit for the end-of-semester examinations. This changed my plans to construct a new house and had to just obtain some construction materials with the remaining KES20000. I am now looking forward to the second transfer that will enable me to obtain other construction materials for the construction work.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have lived in extreme poverty conditions since my childhood days. This can be attributed to the failure of my parents to take me to school because during our childhood days education was perceived as a luxury. With these transfers we would like to spend mostly on housing, clothing and education for my 3 grandchildren who are orphans. These grandchildren were left behind when my daughter died 5 years ago. I will spend KES. 45000 to build them a house, KES. 10000 to buy clothing for all of us. We do not have enough beddings or any warm clothing for me in my old age and also the young children this making us exposed to the cold during rainy nights. The remaining KES. 55000 will help me pay their school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Every morning I usually spend some time with these grandchildren am taking care of having breakfast with them before they leave for school and usually it makes my mornings to be the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I feel like the orphans that am currently taking care of are a burden to me because I am very old at the moment, the strength to vend for them is no longer there because I spent my youthful days vending for their mother and her siblings who unfortunately died. The biggest hardship now is having to ensure that these children get all their needs despite my dwindling strength and old age catching up with me.
