How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it has always been because I am hopeful and happy. Through the financial support, I managed to construct my dream house. Initially, I have been sleeping under a small house which was in very poor condition and one of its rooms had collapsed. Therefore this forced some of m children to vacate and leave with my relatives. I want happiness at all because it is the joy of every parent to live with all her children under one roof. However, I was always optimistic that I would still own a spacious house someday. My prayer was answered and the condition is now very different. We are living happily together without any worry and as a result, I have even gained some weight, because there is no more stress.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly did a splendid job in the entire village and no one could complain. The enrolment was free and fair no one was left out as long as he or she was the resident of the intended village. Also, everyone received the money through mobile phones which was the easiest way for us. On the other hand, I have not heard or seen anything they have not done well so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been yearning to own a better house and after receiving the cash transfer I bought building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, timber, and thread and labour. The previous house was not in a pleasant condition and there was a need for a decent one. Also, I bought some livestock such as two goats at KES 4000. Later on, I bought new clothes for my children to replace the old torn ones. With the reming amount, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 in the evening when I was preparing dinner for my child when I heard my phone vibrating. Since I was a bit nervous I decided to check what the message was all but. After reading the content I confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy since it was my first time receiving such a huge amount of money which is unconditional and nonrefundable.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I can proudly mention is that I now shelter under a decent house. The house that I was initially my sheltering on collapsed and I was sleeping under a very small hut whereby some of my properties could not be accommodated. I have never enjoyed the peace of living in a decent house I only admired those of my friends and neighbors. Whenever it could rain I always had to seek shelter from them and this was so stressful. I am now happy a happy soul together with my family since we no longer have to worry about the insecurity and the rains.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as building poles, nails, thread, iron sheets, and timber. This was for the construction of a new house because the previous one had collapsed and I was sheeting under a temporary hut. I also bought goats as living assets to depend on in case of any financial crisis. Also with the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs and decent clothes for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I finally realize my desire to building a decent shelter for my family because since I got married 2 years ago we have never been able to construct a good house. Currently, we are staying in a small, temporary structure which leaks during rainy season. My plan is to used $ 350 in construct a modern, two-roomed irony roofed. I will invest the remaining amount on improving my farming by purchasing oxen and ox-plow to assist my in preparing my farm as well as hiring them out at a fee. This will be a reliable source of income for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is the happiest part of my day. I always spend my morning working in my farm out the noon when I return home to prepare lunch for my family. After taking lunch I sit under a shade with my mother in-law to relax and chatting with each other something that make me joyous.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability to actualize my desire of constructing a decent shelter for my family has been my biggest hardship. This has forced us to continue living in a poor structure something that has lowered our dignity in the village. I am always worried that my 2 small children may fall sick as result of the strong winds at night.
