How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In a few months to come, I hope to purchase a good number of goats that I will be keeping on my homestead. They will be purposely for my children's education journey. For now, paying their fees has been my major challenge therefore I am hopeful that once I will have these goats, all shall come to end. This is because, as they will increase in number, I will be in a position to sell some and clear the arrears.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well not only in my household but in the entire village. I was satisfied with their unique services which include sending unconditional cash transfers among others. I was also able to plan how I would wish to utilize the money according to my needs. I, therefore can't point out anything that has to be changed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent almost $400 on my second transfer to purchase all the necessary building materials. I had intended to construct a new house because the initial was in poor condition, and leaked during rains. Ever since I got married, I have never enjoyed it. This is because it had become a routine for me always seek shelter from my relatives during the harsh climatic change. I am now happy together with my give children since we no longer have to worry about the rains or any trouble in society. Also, I paid school fees for all my children who are still in primary school so they to sit for their exams. Later on, I bought a bicycle to support me in carrying the jerricans when fetching water from the dams. I feel relieved because I will no longer be using my head or back hence no more pain. Also, I cleared a debt of $30 to a friend which I now have peace of mind. Additionally, I bought solar which will be used by my children in doing their school assignments at night. Back then, they were using candles which were harmful to their health moreover very expensive. With the remaining amount of decent clothes and food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6am while still asleep when I heard a message tone from my phone. The message woke me up and I handed the phone the helper. When he checked, he confirmed to me that I had received the first transfer from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with happiness and thanksgiving for receiving the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, my home was a home during the day but nobody could be happy at night due to lack of lighting system. I used to lit some fire at night so that we could see. When I received the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I made sure I buy a solar panel to provide light at home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, the first thing I did was buying a bicycle for KES 18000. 00. This bicycle was for fetching some water because the distance to the water points was too much. I also bought two goat for KES 9000.00, bought some building materials for KES 10500.00 with an aim of constructing a new house for my children. Thereafter, I bought a mattress for KES 2500.00 because my children had none. Lastly, I bought a smaller solar for KES 6000.00 for lighting.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I live in a small grass-thatched house that was built ten years ago. The house roof leaks during rain but due to lack of money I have not renovated it yet. Through GiveDirectly transfers I will erect a new three-bedroom house using sticks and mud with sixty thousand Kenya shillings this will be able to accommodate my family of five. Twenty-five thousand to purchase six goats, and the balance to buy a bicycle to help my family fetch water since the dam is located very far from our home.
What is the happiest part of your day?
December was the happiest month ever. It happened the rains that we were waiting for a long finally came. It rained heavily and our water sources were filled with water that serves us up to now. This brought me joy because I know I will not suffer much on searching for water.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of food has been a chronic challenge in my household. I used to depend on farming but since the drought began I have been struggling to feed my family. The work that I do earns five hundred Kenya shillings weekly which is insufficient to feed, save and extend the money to education. My family sleeps on an empty stomach almost every time, the last-born daughter has started to develop malnutrition deficiencies. This situation saddens me but hopefully, it will come to an end soon.
