How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before I had received the transfers my intention was that as soon as I receive the money I will use it to pay for tuition fee for my children.Apart from that, I also wanted to look into preferably buying a bed and a mattress since I was sleeping on a traditional bed made from sisal for the longest time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In all honesty GiveDirectly personally did a good job for me and my family because were it not for me receiving the money when I did, my children would have probably been kicked out of school and probably still be sleeping on the sisal bed, so I am very thankful because the organization has made quite a huge and great change from not only just me but for other villagers as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As soon as I received the transfers I decided to settle my first immediate need which was to ensure that I kept my children in school. Therefore I went and paid for four of my children in primary school KES 5,000 clearing the debt left for remainder of the year and then I paid KES 20000 in fees as well for my other child in secondary school. Apart from that, I also bought a bed and a mattress which cost me KES 16,000 and then lastly I used the remainder of what I was left with to ensure that my family and I always had nutrition.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in the kitchen preparing supper when I received the transfers. I was so happy and thanked God for it. I told my husband about it and he was so happy as well since we could now fulfill our dreams.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I was able to buy a bed and mattress for my children and am happy they nolonger sleep on the floor. We also are able to feed healthy all thanks to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I were charcoal burners which is the main source of income in our neighborhood and due to depletion of trees,we were not able to earn enough money to support our family.We had a traditional bed which I slept with my husband while our kids slept on the floor. After receiving the transfers,I spend 20000 KES to pay school fees for our five kids, 16000 KES to buy bed and mattress,15000 KES to buy a cow and the balance to buy food and other basic needs. I thank GiveDirectly for making this happen.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means investment to me. I have a family of ten members . Seven children are in primarily school and one is in secondary school. I am a farmer and my husband is a casual labourer. My husband and I are really struggling to provide for the family necessities. That is feeding and paying school fees for the children. We have no any investment that can help us incase of any emergency. I will use KES 50000 to buy ten goats as investment. I will also use KES 30000 to pay school fees for my children both in primary and secondary school. The remaining KES 30000 will be used to buy two beds and two mattresses for the family. I use sacks as my beddings together with the children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband has been using a bicycle to go to his work. Last month (December) he got a second hand motorcycle at a cost of KES 20000. This has helped him reach his places of work early and without getting axhausted. The asset we have in the family brought happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of investment is the current challenge I am facing. My daughter who is in secondary school has been out of school for one month now due to lack of school fees. If I had some investments like cows and goats , I would sell and clear the school fees balance of KES 18000.
