How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have no greater goal in life than to see all my children succeed. Being a single parent and jobless at the same time, where will I get the money to set big goals? You know everything needs money. Maybe one thing that I want to accomplish next year is to make sure that to of my children, who for their K.C.P.E this year, will be able to join secondary school next year. It will be my greatest joy to see my children complete their studies. I need around $200 but I cannot lie, I do not know where I'll get this money from.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What Give Directly is doing well is that it is helping people to build houses, buy beds, food and livestock. This is very helpful and it has changed our lives. What else can we ask from you? Maybe if you can consider sending us more money. You don't have to improve on anything because there is nothing wrong you've done to our village, keep it up Give Directly!
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It was at lunchtime and I was preparing a meal for my children when my trustee informed me that Give Directly had sent me the money. I was so happy because finally you had fulfilled your promise to me. I'm a widow with five children, my eldest son who is twenty two years old had no house, and this used to stress me up a lot. So I bought ten iron sheets using $95, fifteen bags of cement worth $98 and paid $48 for labour in order to build a house for him. In that line I also spent a few dollars to renovate my own house. I 'm sorry I do not have the exact figure for this. My other four children who are in primary school had school fees balance of $30, I also cleared it using this transfer. I need to do some investment that would be beneficial in future, something that I can sell in case of an emergency, I settled on two goats and paid $60 . Since my husband passed on, my house has always been hunger stricken! So I spent $50 to buy food for my family and thanks to Give Directly we felt how it is to be fully satisfied.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home with the rest of the family members relaxing while narrating stories to each other as we wait for dinner. I was carried away by the laughter and joy of being around the family after spending that whole day working. I received two consecutive messages on the phone and that forced me to seek assistance from the helper. After checking, I received the KES 55000 from Givedirectly on my account. I was very happy about receiving my transfer since it would assist me in fulfilling most of the desires of my life, especially proper shelter.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a spacious modern house for my family is the biggest difference in my daily life. Previously, the structure we were living in was very small something that forced us to cook outside the house. Most of the time, our food would be contaminated with sand during the wind period rendering it inedible. I am very happy for the transfer that has returned the dignity in my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the recent transfer on constructing a decent shelter for my family of 6 members. The structure we were living in was very small and forced us to cook outside the house. This was the miserable experience during the wind period since our food could be easily contaminated with sand. I bought 16 irony sheets, nails, timbers, and building poles. Similarly, I set aside KES 7000 for labor charges. In addition, I spent KES 11000 to boost the goats keeping business, the intention is to sell them whenever they reproduced in the future to cater for any financial emergency. Also, I bought a spacious bed and mattress since we were sleeping on a small traditional bed with a mat as bedding which was not comfortable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a good and safer house for my family. This is because the current house where I reside is leaking when it rains and this forces me to seek shelter from my neighbor's house. I survive through a charcoal-burning business that earns me less than KES 500 per week. This makes it impossible to save and build a better house for my family since all the money I earn from charcoal work we spend on food expenses. I will use KES 40000 to renovate my house and add one more room so it can comfortably accommodate my family of 9.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My dream of because a livestock farmer came true in the month of March. My daughter who secured casual jobs (house help) in town send me KES 7000. This brought joy to my life because I used that money to buy 2 goats. I am now a happy person practising livestock farming that I have been my ambition over the years.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a widow, my husband died seven years ago. Raising my seven children alone has been a big problem for me. As my children grow up, more expenses are needed for their upkeep. My biggest challenge currently is providing food for them and paying school fees. I depend on the charcoal burning business. This job earns me less tha KES 500 per week which is very little to sustain all the family needs.
