How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
School fees have been the main challenge that I have had to deal with. Therefore I invested in a goat and a dairy project and I am positive that with proper management I would be able to earn a livelihood from it. My goal is for me to concentrate fully on the project. I am more focused and determined to make ends meet.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has empowered us financially without any sort of discrimination. Both the young and the old were treated with a high level of professionalism and we highly appreciate it. So far throughout my interaction with the staff, I did not encounter anything that was not done accordingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Starting a dairy farming project has been the greatest desire of my heart. I knew that with it my children would have a surplus of milk daily. Additionally, we would sell some hence earning a livelihood. Therefore I used KES 50,000 in purchasing two healthy dairy cows. I am married and blessed with seven children. Thus, I used the remaining amount of the transfer in buying foodstuffs for my family. It feels good to have achieved my dream in a short period.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a planting season at around 6 pm, we were still at the farm doing the final touches before the sunset, suddenly I heard my neighbour celebrating loudly, upon asking what the happiness was all about, that was when I learnt that they had received money from GiveDirectly, I immediately reach out to where my phone was, upon confirming I saw a Mpesa message, it was the happiest day of my life, my family and I were full of happiness, we went back home and embark on how we will our transfer. I am so grateful for the support that brought so much joy and happiness.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My daily life is different now, we now live in a decent and spacious house, my family is all happy, the house is no longer stuffy because it is big, in addition to that I can comfortably harvest rainwater because of the iron sheet house, I am now able to save up money that I used in buying drinking water. I am so grateful for the support that changed our living standards thus bringing so much love and happiness to our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer, married and blessed with Seven children, Upon receiving my transfer I used KES 40,000 in building a decent house for my family, the house that I was living in was small but unfortunately, I was unable to construct one due to financial constraints and school fees demand from children's school, I then used KES 3000 in paying school fees balances for my children, I then used the remaining amount in buying foodstuffs and clothes for my children. I am so happy for the support that transformed our living standard for a better one. It

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I got involved in a motorcycle accident two years ago , this ripped me off my income because I depended on the business to earn a living. It left me with a broken hip that I am still nursing up to date. Life has never been thes same again because my wife who does casual jobs is forced to provide for our family of 9 all by herself. It's hardly enough to cater for my medication and pay for monthly insurance of KES 500 per month. I plan on spending KES 50,000 to pay for medical bills and the rest of the money I will buy a dairy cow. I feel relieved because Givedirectly will help lift this heavy burden from us. My health will improve and I get get back on my feet again upon receiving this money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After ailing for two years,I am happy because my health is improving. For the last 4 months, I have been walking around without using a walking stick or supporting myself. It brings me joy and hope knowing that it's matter of time and I will be fully healed.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I got involved in a motorcycle accident, I was badly injured and am still recovering two years down the line. My family of 9 has been through tough times as we are drained financially. All the money we collect from fundraising goes into paying for medication and transport to hospital which is about 150 kilometers away. I spend KES 5,000 per month in hospital bills and it is not easy. Sometimes, sleepless nights and severe pain is the routine when I fail to take medicine as prescribed because I may skip my clinic checkup other months due to lack of money.
