What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had to return to my parents with five children after divorcing my husband five years ago. Throughout this time, we have been living in an abandoned house in the neighborhood because my parents, who have passed away, left an old house and a small piece of land as most of the resources were used to cater for their medication. When I received the first transfer, I had to save it and combine it with a portion of the second transfer to pay for a quarter-acre plot of land from a neighbor. I am glad that after spending $900, I now have full ownership of the plot of land where my family will build a new home. Even though I am still working on casual labor to earn money for construction materials, I am relieved to have a plot of land on which to farm in the meantime. In addition, I spent the remaining funds on a $50 sack of maize, which we used as a food source, and the remaining transfers on new pairs of clothes for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly made sure that every household in our village was enrolled and received an equal amount of money at the same time. Everyone was eager to make their own decisions in order to solve and address their household problems. Everything went smoothly from the start, thanks to the clear information provided by the field team, who patiently explained all the details we required.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am currently looking forward to purchasing construction materials to help build a new house for my family of six after making full payment for the piece of land from my neighbor. I have had to rely on casual labor, which has been difficult to come by due to the current economic downturn. This has been the primary source of my children's school fees as well as the daily foodstuffs that I always purchase with my daily wages. I intend to begin saving for the project and will begin construction as soon as I have enough money to purchase the materials.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Raising five children single-handedly is an uphill task but I don't have a choice but to keep forging forward. We parted ways with my husband a while back and I was forced to return to our home with my children. Things have been tough on my end because my both parents are late. Receiving money from GiveDirectly gave me the hope of owning land. Thus, I used KES 50,000 on acquiring a parcel of land. I then used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes. I depend on casual jobs and farming to earn an income and that is the reason I was unable to secure land due to unreliable sources of income.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
A hope of a better tomorrow was revived the moment I was promised the unconditional transfer. Owning a parcel of land is the greatest achievement that I am proud of. I am assured that my children would have a place to live in without feeling out of place. I am optimistic that with my second transfer I would be able to construct a house for my children. I am forever grateful for the support that lifted my life and gave me hope and a fresh beginning.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was heading to the shopping centre for an errand. Then suddenly I heard my phone ringing, Upon checking I realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from Segovia technology. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because this meant that I would be able to accomplish the goals that I had of owning a parcel of land. finally, we embarked on planning how we would utilise the money. We are indeed grateful for the support that lifted our living standard amazingly.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a separated mother of 6 with no land to farm .I currently struggle to put food on the table for my children. This is because the grocery business I used to operate collapsed last year due to inadequate funds.Food shortages has forced me to engage in laundry activities at households that are better off even though this work is less paying.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the past 4 months I harvested 3 bags of maize in a 0.2 acres of land that I rented. This brought joy to my life because my household became food secure for 2 months.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest desire has been to buy a piece of land and settle with my family. In 2017 my family was displaced in Mau forest due to conflicts and forest reclamation. As a result, my husband and I have had separate ways hence lack of unity and togetherness in the family. This has emotionally drained me because my children are in different households and have not had a chance to grow up together under the care of both parents. I am glad that these transfers will enable me to buy 0.2 acres of land and also construct a two-roomed house with KES 20000.
