How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I used my first transfer in purchasing goats, this is a sustainable and long-term project with proper management, thus generating more income for us. I was able to pay for secondary education for my son who was joining form one, I am so happy that I was able to accomplish all this with the aid that I had received from the GiveDirectly, My life is different now, I am glad that I got this life-changing opportunity that transformed our lives positively.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am happy that GiveDirectly Chose our village, our lives will never be the same again, Everyone was happy and grateful So far everything was done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of nine children, I am in the charcoal business therefore the only way that I can do to safeguard the future of my children is through education, When my firstborn received his admission letter to a secondary school, I was worried that he might miss the opportunity due to lack of fees, The transfer came at a time when I needed it most, I was relieved on receiving it because it enabled me to pay KES 30,000 for my son's tuition fees, I then used the rest of the transfer to clear school fees arrears for rest of my children. I am happy that my Son joined his school of choice, all that was possible because of the aid that we received.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still vividly remember it was around 4 PM when I was from my daily hustle when I heard my phone ringing. That was alerting me of a new message and since I had anxiously been waiting for one, I decided to check. I couldn't believe what I saw, I just wish you could see how reacted at that particular moment. I was overwhelmed with joy and started celebrating with my family for grace.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having the goats and ox in my homestead brings the biggest difference in my daily life. I settled in purchasing them because they have numerous benefits as compared to the other domestic animals. With the goats, I am promised they will reproduce and increase in number very soon. My aim is when they multiply I will be selling the matured offsprings and send my support to my children's education. I have always been wishing to see them going to school without being sent home every now and then to collect school fees. I feel this a permanent solution to this since it has been stressing me for years. Also with the ox, it will majorly help me with the farming activities. I will combine it with that of my relative and make it a pair since that is how they operate. It will now be a relief to me because I have been using my own hands in doing the exercise and I ended up getting low harvests since I could not utilize my whole farm. There is now an assurance that the level of food production shall increase. Courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying livestock such as an ox and some goats. These have been the well thoughtful assets that I have been longing to own for quite some time but I could not afford to purchase them becasue they were too costly. I later cleared school fees arrears for my son who had finished his primary studies. In addition, I bought some bedding such as a new bed and a mattress to replace the old mats that they have been using as beddings. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buy enough foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Constructing a separate house for my children has been my greatest desire for a long time, but this has never been possible due to the financial challenges I face in life. This has forced me to seek refuge for my children in their grandmother's house and my plan once I receive this money is to spend 35000 shillings only to ensure the house is complete. The remaining amount of the first transfer will help me to buy a modern bed plus a mattress in order to replace the old ones that I currently own. With the second transfer, I intend to buy 6 goats at $30 each and also 2 indigenous dairy cows at $300. This will change my life for the better and hence, a transformed life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The morning is the happiest part of my day because I usually find myself energized and ready to do my casual work in order to earn for my family. Unlike in the afternoon when I am always busy doing my work and evening finds me when I am fully exhausted.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. This is because, I majorly depend on charcoal burning but it's income is very low and at the same time inconsistent since it takes time to make at most 10 sacks that I sell at $4 each. This income is hardly enough to cater for my family's basic needs like food, school fees and shelter.
