How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, my new goal was to buy livestock more so goats. I had desired to have them because they multiply within a short period. They would therefore enable me to pay school fees for my children which have been a challenge. Apart from that, I would be able to cater to all my household needs without straining like before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We all have houses, In my opinion, GiveDirectly did when in all the sectors and everyone in our household was satisfied. First, the idea of enrolling each household and receiving support in form of cash stood out. This has enabled us to build nice houses and this is evident from the current appearance. We used to shelter in the traditional huts which were so hectic by then. Therefore according to me, I do not see any sector that GiveDirectly need to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on settling a dept of KES 5000 to a friend, and an bow at peace because he could frustrate me all time. I also bought a new wooden door at KES 3500 and a piece of iron sheets. This was for the completion of my house which I was stuck at some point as a result of insufficient funds. To add to that I bought a new modern bed at KES 8000 and a mattress at KES 5500. I am so grateful that I managed to replace the old traditional beds that I have been using for all those years. It is a relief for now since I am no longer in so much pain. To add to that, I purchased new school uniforms for my children and cleared their fees arrears at a total of KES 6000. In addition to that, I bought plastic chairs at KES 2100. I am so thankful since earlier on, we used to sit on the old mats. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buy sufficient foodstuffs like vegetables, maize flour, and cereals.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to the market at exactly 9:45 in the morning when my mobile phone started vibrating continuously. I opted to check the contents later because I was in a hurry. After I was done with the task I was handling, I rushed back home so that I could get some assistance in reading the messages. I asked my son to check for me the contents of the notifications since I was so curious. Upon checking, he confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, they had debited my first transfers as promised earlier. I was so excited and I remember canceling all the plans for that day so that I could celebrate with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now grateful to GiveDirectly for supporting me finally. Through this money, I have been able to build a new decent house. The previous one that I was sheltering on was in a poor state, it had a grass thatched roof that was dilapidated and could leak excessively whenever it could rain. My four children always had to seek shelter from my neighbors and relatives, which was hectic and stressful. I have never enjoyed the peace of living with all my family under one roof for years and I have always been hopeful that someday my will come true. My family has been the family's breadwinner who also relies on odd jobs with meager income and he couldn't afford to buy any of the necessary materials to build a new house. Therefore sleeping in an iron-roofed spacious house has for sure restored the joy in my life. I do not have to worry about the rains, the insecurities, and the harmful insects. I have also finally been able to shelter under one roof with my six family members which have been my long-time dream.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying sevral building materials which include thirty-five pieces of building poles at KES 2800, twenty pieces of iron sheets KES 16000, nails at KES 1500, and the labor KES 5000. I had to prioritize this with an intention of a new house becasue the initial one was a small round grass-thatched hut. My children used to seek shelter from my relatives every night. I also used KES 3000 and paid school fees for my three children. They are now at peace studying without any interference like before which is an assurance of good results. With the remaining amount of money, I am using ut in buying foodstuffs for my family

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of 8 children and I am living with my mother inlaw inside the same room. My house is very small and not enough to accomodate all of us. I usually sleep outside the house with my husband, giving a chance for my children and my mother inlaw to sleep in the house for 4 years now.I have been having a dream of building a good house for years but my husband is unemployed and we depend on charcoal burning business to cater for all our household needs. we are getting 2,000 KES a week, amount which is not enough to feed the family plus paying school fees for my 5 children who are in upper primary school. My dream of having a good and spacious house which can accommodate all of my family has been a night mare. Receiving this money means, I will build a four bedroomed house which will accommodate my family and live happy life like others.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am living in a life which we eat two meals in a day.I usually wake in the morning and prepare porridge for the children who go to school, I boil the food which remained from yesterday' supper and then I leave to the forest with my husband to cut down trees for our charcoal burning business. In the evening, I usually enjoy a heavy meal after stretching the whole day without anything. My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I am resting after a heavy and strenuous job and enjoying my meal with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a mother of 8 children living in a one bedroomed house . I have been living in this house since I was married but my husband has no strength to build a bigger house because the charcoal business we are doing cannot allow save some money to build a good house. My biggest hardship I have faced in life is lucking a good house with privacy; something that makes me to sleep outside with my husband for 4 years now.
