How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I live in a mud house. I dream that someday I will be able to build a decent house for my family. To ensure that this dream come to reality, I plan on saving money from the dairy project for me to realize this goal. This has not been possible since what I earn is very little.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the organization has supported the less privileged in society to cater to their basic needs. The transfer came at a time when the prices of maize flour were extremely high. We are forever grateful for the support that lifted our lives in times of need. I have not seen things that needed to be corrected.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband works in Nairobi as a security guard, and I am a casual worker in the village. We are still trusting God for a child. Upon receiving my second transfer, my husband and I thought of a project that would be sustainable and reliable, therefore we ended up settling on dairy farming where we bought a dairy cow worth $500. This is because we wanted to commence selling milk and also use the remaining for our consumption. This was not possible before, due to financial constraints. I am relieved that I will no longer be buying milk daily, thus saving money and, more so, earning an income from it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home preparing an evening meal for my family when my transfer was sent. Specifically, it was around 8 pm and I was longing to finish up pending household chores before I could resort to taking an early rest. I was overjoyed when I received confirmation of the receipt of my transfer. Buying food was a major challenge for me that week due to financial constraints. As a result, I was ecstatic because I knew I would begin to experience a positive change in my life. To be honest, I had never received such a large sum of money in my life. Thanks to GiveDirectly for considering receiving its transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before the transfer, I had little purchasing power and relied heavily on casual jobs to supplement my family's food budget. The fact that food prices had risen with little cash flow in our economy made life nearly unbearable. However, thanks to the transfer, I was able to not only purchase two lactating cows but also buy food in bilk. As a result, life has become more bearable because we are no longer in need. Furthermore, by selling three liters of milk, we were able to earn an extra KES 120 per day, which we could not previously.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had always wanted to raise lactating cows to provide milk for my family. However, I was unable to carry out this plan due to my low level of income, which severely limited my purchasing power. As a result, I decided to use the GiveDirectly transfer to purchase two lactating cows. At the moment, we are able to get free milk from the cows, about 5 liters per day. My family consumes 2 liters of milk per day and we sell the remaining 3 liters to supplement our family income. I have felt a lot of relief since I received the transfer because caring for the family has become much easier. The family never imagined our lives would positively change in such a dramatic way.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to build a house. I live in one house that doubles up as a kitchen and a bedroom.I will spend about KES 50,000 on this and also buy a water tank to collect rain water, at about KES 30,000 .With the remaining KES 20,000, I will start a poultry keeping business to support me as a source of income.Ibwill spend what I make on daily household needs. Ultimately, I aim at growing income from selling eggs upto KES 2000 per day but for a start, with about 20 chicken that I will buy as soon as I receive the transfers, I will be making at least KES 1400 per week.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last six months, I have been happy about the fact that there is sufficient rainfall in my location. This means that crops are doing well and there is plenty of water for domestic use, unlike during drought when the basic need for water is a problem. I used to trek for about 5 Km to collect it. Consistent rains have relieved me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is my current challenge because I do not have an income only relying on my husband who works as a security guard, earning just enough to feed the family. Due to this, I do not have money to build a proper home. I will build it when I get the transfers.
