How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main goal which I am struggling to accomplish is to see my children get a better education. I will ensure this happens only if I pay their school fees in time to prevent them from being sent home for the same. As of now, I have resumed my charcoal-making business after taking a resting period. I am using this business to save some money for their education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly relieved so many people from heavy burdens. My community and I were going through hard times bearing in mind we have not harvested any crops for the last 5 years. Our children had dropped out of school, houses were poorly structured, and getting food was a big challenge for many. GiveDirectly fixed a bigger percentage of these problems and we are very grateful. No one in our community complains about the organization, instead, we are praying for it to come back even though they said the transfer is just twice. In case they find another organization kindly link it to us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first agenda that I had was school fees followed by livestock. Based on that, I paid KES 30000.00 for my two children who were joining the secondary school in form one. I paid KES 15000.00 for each one in their various schools to ensure that they do not get disturbances in their first secondary school experience. For so long I desired to rear the high-breed Galla goats. Therefore I opted to buy two of them for KES 12000.00. For the remaining amount, I opted to save and use it for the family's upkeep so that I take a rest from the tiring job of making charcoals for sale.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was 7am in the morning when I received a message and since I'm illiterate, I handed over the phone to my husband as I usually do. I didn't have much expectation because I never thought the transfer can be send that early. The smile I saw on my husband's face upon reading the message and I could tell it must have been some good news and he confirmed to me that I had received the transfers. That was such a good way to start our day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am proud owner of a land in the nearly market and I believe I will be a landlord soon which will boost my husband's income and my children will finally get a chance to settle in school without fear of being chased every now and then.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I have always wished to own some rental houses in the nearby market but that seemed like a nightmare because the little income that he earns from his charcoal business wouldn't afford to cater for family responsibilities and buy a piece of land. On a good days, he would make KES 2000 per week but he would go without selling even a sack for some weeks and the prolonged drought has made it even worse. It became a struggle to pay school fees for our six children and most are the days when they would be send home for school fees which has led to drop in their performance. Previously, we used to sell livestock to pay their school fees but all our livestock were swept away by the severe drought. I spend KES 15000 to buy a small piece of land in the nearby market which I'm looking forward to build some rentals with my second transfer, KES 22000 to buy four goats and saved the balance towards my children's school fees. I happy that finally, they will be fully back in school and able to concentrate on their studies.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My children are a priority and I do not joke around with their education. I have two boys and four girls. One of my daughters is sitting for her final exams in primary school in March. In May she will be joining high school. I am so happy that I will be able to take her to form one with comfort. Receiving these transfers will ease the hustle that comes with looking for a school, her admission, and the money required to buy her school stationery. I know if I invest in my children's education today my future is safe in their hands because I will have confidence in their capacity to support me in my old age.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy especially when my husband has had a successful day at work and brings home food. Every day I see my children healthy and playful it fills my heart with so much joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The financial limitation is our main concern. My husband is a charcoal burner, he is the sole breadwinner. The little profit he makes goes to paying school fees for our children and buying food. He has to work so that he can get some money for food. This means less of him at home so that we do not luck. Every time we have to skip a meal it saddens my heart because I know he has tried his best but things just have not worked out.
