How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different because through this money , I have managed to buy enough building materials in order to build a new house to live with my family. Raising school fees for my children was also a problem. I couldn't pay for them on time and they were frequently sent home because of this. I am grateful because I have paid for them on time and they were allowed back to school. I also have a pair of oxen to help me in doing farming for a better harvest. I used to hire from neighbours during the planting season. I am glad that I won't be hiring from anyone, instead I will be hiring to them at a fee.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done well in uplifting our living standards by giving money to help ourselves. We can attest that our lives are not the same again. I don't see anything that GiveDirectly doesn't do well in our region.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the second transfer on buying building materials that include building poles, nails and timber in order to construct a new house. My dream was to build a new home since the old house was in a bad condition. I also spent a portion of the amount on paying school fees for my children at KES 12000. I spent the remaining amount on buying foodstuffs and paying for other household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference is that the transfer has enabled me to build a new spacious house enough for all of us. The house that I was living in previously was very small and could not accommodate the whole of my family. My children had to seek shelter elsewhere in my neighbour's homes. Through the transfer, I have managed to build a house, spacious enough to accommodate my all family members.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had never thought in my life that I would one day build a new house. It seemed to be a dream that would never come true. However, this became true to me that morning I received the notification from GiveDirectly. I heard a message on my phone and on checking to confirm, it was from GiveDirectly that I had received my first transfer. I was overwhelmed with joy and thankful to GiveDirectly for financial support.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to purchase Iron sheets, poles and other building materials in order to construct a new spacious house to accommodate my family. The house that has been my shelter for a long time is very small and cannot accommodate my family. My children were seeking shelter from neighbours. I am happy that soon I will be moving to my new house which is spacious enough to accommodate us all. I addition to this, I purchased a pair of oxen to facilitate early preparation and effective timing for cultivation. Through the pair, I will increase my acreage of arable land to get maximum yields. I am also happy that I will no longer be incurring costs of hiring oxen which were hectic to me. I also cleared school fees for my brother whos certificate had been withheld in school due to fees arrears that were outstanding after completing his studies. I spent the rest of the transfer to buy food and other basic necessities for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For more than ten years I have been using hand jembe to tilt my land because I could not afford an ox plough and oxen. The yields from this has not been adequate for feeding my family.Receiving money from GD means I can now buy oxen and ox plough which will increase the size of land ploughed and by extension the yields produced. This will also assist in generating of income because I will also plough other people's land for money. I will also build a spacious house so that my children can get a better place to sleep.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is usually in the evening when I come back home from construction work. It's the time I play with my children as I cool off from the tough day that was due to the nature of my job.The joy on the faces of my children when we play together makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Other than subsistence farming,I deal in construction of houses. Both ventures have proved to be very unreliable in the recent past making it difficult to generate enough money for me to provide a three piece meal for my family. The implication of missing meals is taking toll on my children and therefore the biggest hardship am currently facing food insecurity emanating from lack of stable source of income and low yields from farming.
