How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I had not received this transfer, I would not have gotten money to construct a house. The small house was insufficient for my family to live in and to host social functions. My friends would only visit my home during the day. I felt that I was not fully taking part in my desired social life. I now have a place in my friend's cycle. There will be plenty of room for me to host future social functions without the strain of having to conclude events within a day that would require me to spend more money than I could raise.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well that I have nothing that they would do differently. Their enrollment led to great improvements in my life and those of my neighbors who were suffering from different aspects of poverty in this life. Mine was a lack of a house.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer on building a house. I have been living in a single room house that doubled up a kitchen, a living room, and a palace to sleep in. It was not conducive to hosting guests. I decided to build the house with this money because this is the only lump sum money that I have ever gotten. I get very little from farming and doing menial jobs that only serve to meet our daily needs. I also bought a heifer that I plan to rear and later sell the offspring in the future. I will also be supplying milk to my community and earn an income out of it. I then paid school fees for my children. I used the remaining amount to buy a few clothes for my children.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the availability of milk in our household. The hustle of looking for and buying milk from the neighbor next door is now a thing of the past. I feel so relieved with this and looking forward to even improving the living standards of my family going forward. I am also looking forward to making other valuable family investments that will change the living standards of my family as well.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I saw an MPESA message and straight away went and bought a cow. I could not wait longer to make this dream come to pass. I felt that the money that I had received could be diverted into other uses other than the cow which was top in my priority list.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I used KES 35000 of my recent transfer to buy a dairy cow and used the remaining amount to buy food and other basic household needs for the family. I did not have one of my own and I had felt the pain of buying milk each and every passing day to feed the family. With this, I can now save up enough money that will enable me make other valuable investments that will increase the level of income for my family. I also used the remaining amount of money to buy food and other basic household needs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The maize I get from my 0.3 acre farm is only enough for consumption. My current house is getting small for my growing family of 5. Receiving this money is an opportunity to build a new house to accommodate my family and guests once in a while. The house will cost $200. I will also buy a cow for $300 which is going to provide milk for consumption and surplus for sale.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Going out everyday to look for casual jobs doesn't guarantee pay at the end of the day. But when I do, coming home in the evening to my children is a good feeling knowing we have beaten a day against hunger. This is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a single mother of 4. Getting food for my children comes after a tough hustle. When I do not get casual jobs in the village especially during droughts, my children are forced to go to bed on black tea and sometimes on an empty stomach. I have foregone meals severally so that they could eat. Raising my children alone is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. My big worry is that they may not make it through secondary school due to financial constraints.
