How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the year comes to a close, I intend to allocate the remaining $200 as previously planned and initiate our transport venture. This project fills me with excitement, as it promises a steady stream of income, simplifying our daily living expenses. Additionally, the motorbike will serve as a means for our children to commute to school, sparing them from long walks and ensuring they arrive on time and return home early. This is especially significant to us as the safety and well-being of our family is our utmost priority.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
One of the commendable actions of Give Directly is providing us the opportunity to realize our potential by directly transferring funds and permitting recipients to address their diverse financial requirements without any conditions. This approach has fostered significant financial empowerment within our village. Many individuals have had the opportunity to manage and utilize money since the advent of the Give Directly organization in our area.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my second transfers from Give Directly, I was thrilled and eager to complete the projects I had initiated with my first transfer. From the $530 I got (after a $20 deduction for the phone I was provided), I allocated $120 towards completing my two-room house, which now comfortably accommodates my family. I invested $80 in two goats to enhance our family assets and create a potential income stream. Additionally, I spent $65 on a new mattress to replace our old one. I've saved $200 with plans to purchase a used motorbike, aiming to venture into the transport business."

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had barely finished resting in the house when I got the Mpesa SMS. When I first saw it, my heart was bursting with excitement, and I could already picture the lovely home I had always wanted. Additionally, my kids were currently not attending school, but after seeing the money in my Mpesa, I was confident they would go back and match the rest of the other students, thus making me emotionally satisfied.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As a family, we are humbled to be among the selected ones in this program. We have seen changes in our lives as compared to the time before we received the transfers. Our children have gone back to school after staying at home for about a month due to having no money to pay for their tuition fees. I will be among those people in the community who own goats and feel like they count in matters that concern the community at large. This brings honor to my life, and I am grateful to give directly transfers. Our lives have changed drastically.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfer, I headed to my children's school and cleared all the arrears together with the coming term tuition fees, which cost me $15. This is because my children have been going through emotional torture by being sent home every time I have not paid the tuition fees, and I never wanted to see them through this kind of pain again. Another thing that gave me sleepless nights was the state of my one-room grass-thatched home, which served us as a bedroom and at the same time a dining room and even at times a kitchen during the rainy season. I have already assembled all the materials needed to have my house in place, which took $40, and within a few weeks from now I will be living in my new home. I have also set aside $8, which I will use to buy three goats so they can multiply in numbers and shield me financially in the future.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of four with two being children. All the family lives in a one-room house with a grass roof and it leaks during the rainy season. It also lacks privacy since I can not dress myself when the children are in the house. I will use $600 to build a two-room house with an iron sheet roof. This is spacious enough to accommodate the family. I will also use $200 to buy furniture and bedding for the family. The remaining amount will help the family buy food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Food shortage has been a challenge for my family. However, on the previous Christmas day, I slaughtered a chicken and also prepared chapati for the family to celebrate. The family had last taken such a meal one year back. The children enjoyed the meal and that brought joy to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband has been jobless for the past four months now. He was a driver and lost his job. He is at home now. I do casual jobs earning approximately $40 per month which caters to food only and it is even not enough. My family takes one meal per day due to a lack of food. Sometimes the children fail to go to school due to hunger. Food shortage is the current challenge I am facing in life.
