How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I cannot actively involve myself in strenuous activities to generate an income and help provide for my needs, I wish to start raising livestock. Am glad that the cash transfer helped me to acquire poultry, which I have been rearing to date. My aim is to further the venture by owning goats and cows, as I could easily sell these animals in the future to raise more money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am grateful to Give Directly for giving me money that helped alleviate the hardships that my family was facing due to poverty. Through the money, I built a new house, covered my husband’s hospital bills when he was sick, and put food on the table for my family. I could never be more grateful for the support. In my opinion, there is nothing that the organization could improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my initial transfer, I started building a new two-room house. At that time, I was staying in a one-room grass-thatch roof house, which was in poor shape and would easily collapse from winds. By the time I got the second cash, only the roof was left to bring the new house to completion. So, I spent $226 to buy twenty-four pieces of iron sheets. Am grateful that the house was completed within an ideal time frame and I successfully moved into it, days before the old one crumbled. I spent the remaining amount on buying food for my family. This ensured that the household had enough food for at least three months.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was from nursing my sick husband in the hospital and in great distress because I was not able to pay the medical expenses. I was not expecting any financial help soon. I heard my phone buzzing and since I could not comprehend the messages, I called my son who confirmed to me that I had received my transfer. I was greatly relieved since I could now pay the medical bill.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My husband has been ailing from a chronic kidney failure disease for almost three years. Settling the medical bill and regular check-up expenses was a challenge for me. I have sold all my livestock as well as sought financial help from relatives to cater for his medication but still was not enough. Sometimes he had to skip some check-ups because I could not raise the required amount. Receiving the transfer was a huge relief to me since I was able to clear part of the bill. This is the biggest difference in my daily life because it would have taken months to raise the amount I paid.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on paying part of my husband's medical bill. He has been bedridden for three years due to a kidney problem. I had lost hope of paying the bill since it was accumulating day by day. I was worried that the medication might be discontinued for failing to pay. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I could now breathe a sigh of relief when the transfer came. I am at peace now because my husband is getting the required medication. I spent the small portion that remained on buying foodstuffs which include a sack of maize and daily vegetables. This ensured that my family was getting enough food daily midst the financial distress I am facing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of five members and we are all living in the same one-bedroom house which lacks privacy. It is impossible to change clothes in the house after taking a bath because everyone is in the house. One has to go to the forest to change clothes. My husband is old and economically inactive. I do casual work which gives me approximately KES 3000 per month. The money caters only to food in the family. I will use KES 100000 to build a three-bedroom house for the family. This is spacious enough to accommodate even visitors. I will also use KES 10000 to buy food for the family. I want to thank Givedirectly organize because this money will improve my living standards.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband was taken to hospital in January 2022 by well-wishers and got medication. He has now improved despite the food shortage problem in the family. My husband's health has brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband has been sick for the past three years. Well-wishers took him to the hospital and he was diagnosed. He is now doing well but the challenge is food and shelter. He is not supposed to miss any meal but due to lack of a job, he sometimes goes without any meal. His healthy has gone very down. He also suffers from wind because the house is not good. It has holes all over. Lack of food and shelter is the challenge I am facing in life.
