How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intended to cut the high cost of buying milk by buying a cow right after receiving the second transfer, but the pressure to complete the construction of rental houses we had started could not allow it. I had prolific breeds a year ago, but an unknown disease swept them away, leaving my family with only one that produces a few liters of milk. At the moment, I have no new goal since I am still working hard to buy a cow that I had in mind before receiving the first and the second transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The approach by GiveDirectly and the choice to give us monetary support perfectly solved the problems in most houses in the village. The transfers were unconditional and have been up to us to spend on whatever we felt fit. I hope any other organization giving support would emulate GiveDirectly and allow their beneficiaries to make their own choices. On the other hand, it would have been even better if GiveDirectly present a project that focuses on Education for our children since most passed their exams but could not further their education since their parents cannot raise their school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Even though I never had a plan to spend the second transfer on the completion of the rental rooms, I could not resist the urge knowing that they were part of the income-generating projects I had started. I had to postpone the purchase of a cow, hoping to buy the dairy cow once I get the tenants. I spent KES 32000 buying a 5000 liters plastic water reservoir that will collect the rainwater to be used within the plots. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on clearing the cost of the labor that worked on the finishing of the construction. I am glad that the transfer was enough to make all the necessary fittings in the rooms and are now ready to be rented out.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am and I was at home doing my laundry when I heard my niece telling my mother-in-law that there was a message on her phone saying that she had received the transfer. She was thus asking her to give me the phone so that I could confirm to her if what had transpired was true. It is at this time that I went and switched on my phone which I had left in the house. I immediately got the SMS saying that we had received KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised. I was so happy on seeing this that I called my husband and I informed him about it. He was so happy and we thanked God for blessing us. I then saw it best to safeguard the money and hence I transferred it to my SACCO account before I could embark on the work that I was doing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference into our lives as a family. This is because we had some amount that we had saved that we were planning to use in constructing the underground water tank but the transfer from GiveDirectly saved us from spending it on that project. We thus diverted the saved money to another project. We used it on building another house for our family to live in, though we are yet to complete building it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 35000 of our recent transfer on constructing an underground water tank. There are rental houses that we are still constructing and we had planned to build a water tank that we were going to use in collecting the rainwater. The rainwater is going to be pumped to another water tank that is going to be mounted on the rooftop of the rental houses. The rainwater is going to be for tenants' use. We also spent another KES 5000 on buying window glasses and placing them on the rental houses. The rental houses are going to be our future source of income and that is why we decided to build them. We also bought two sheep at KES 5000 each. We bought them so that they could help us in the future when they will have reproduced and multiplied in number. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for their great support. May God bless you.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I started a long-term investment of building rental houses at a nearby center that will be giving me income. I am almost done except for buying water tanks to be collecting clean drinking water and also installing a good gate for security. I plan to use KES 50,000 to finish up the building. For the rest of the amount, I will invest by purchasing a dairy cow. Receiving this money, therefore, means, I will bring my dreams to reality.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last week my daughter and my niece did their exams and they did very well making me proud as a parent. They have been improving lately and I could not be happier.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is taking care of and providing medication for my five-year-old disabled child. Every month we are supposed to buy KES 5000 medication for him which is very strenuous. He needs constant care, medication needs a lot of time. I also have other three children to look after, among other family responsibilities. I often get so tired, exhausted from all this.
